i don't currently live anywhere near 4g service and was wondering ..... my phone was set to 4g/3g when i got the phone and i set it to cdma only since i dont get 4g. does the battery usage suffer when the phone is set to 4g/3g or is it better when set to cdma only? since i don't live near 4g is there any benefit to having my phone set to 4g/3g?

From everything I've read, you don't want the phone constantly searching for a 4g connection that isn't there. It will eat up battery. Even in areas that have both the handoffs between networks can use up power faster. You're doing the right thing. Just switch the power settings to allow 4g when you're travelling to an area with coverage.

And all things being equal two radios on are worse than one (for your battery life!)

this was my train of thought , just wanted to get some other input, thanks

sure, any app turning off mobile data will help, assuming that it works correctly.

I live in an area that currently only has 3G service, but often travel into 4G service area, when I first got my phone I locked into CDMA Only (3G) thinking it would help battery life, but after traveling often into a 4G area I changed it to CDMA/LTE (3G/4G) and saw no noticeable change in battery life in 3G only areas, it is like if the phone knows there is no 4G service available the radio for that seems to go to sleep. Now, if I am right on the edge of 3G/4G, where the phone is constantly switching between the two service, the battery drains like fruit in a juicer.

What I can say though is signal strength has more to do with battery life than anything, if you are in an area with weak signal, 3G or 4G, it will suck your battery quickly.
