Morristown tn here and noticed we got 4G last night sometimes. The service is super fast and I love that part but for some reason its killed battery. Off charge at 6am with a bump then dead at 12pm. Moderate usage (same as always) fresh battery at 12 and only 25% left at 6. I usualy get until around 8 or 9 until in the red. I only carry a spare for when I am out without charger but needed it today. Any suggestions.

You can always go under your settings and toggle 4G off, then just toggle it back on when you need/want it.

Turn 4G off! lol Its a battery killer, either get an extended battery to fully enjoy it or only turn it on when you need the extra speed.

4G is awesome, but it eats battery life. I live in a 4G area but work in a 3G area. I have WiFi at both places. Use the WiFi if at all possible and 3G unless you need the speed. You might want to invest in the 2750mAh battery. It is well worth it. Sorry that I don't have a magic bullet for you.

Other threads have covered the in's and out's of battery life. Take a look.

if 4g just came online in your area I would suggest waiting it out a few days. there might be some 3g/4g hand off issues since it just came online in your area causing some issues.

I myself get 9-15 hours with 4g on all the time in NJ.

you also might need to tweak some brightness(mine is set to auto) and sync settings to maximize your up time as well.

good luck.

I've gotten 12+ hours today in a strong 4G area on the extended battery and am currently showing 69% left.

I still don't believe 4G in and of itself is killing the battery. It has to be the constant switching to 3G that kills it.

The 4g will kill the battery. U might want to look into a extended battery if u can't charge it throughout the day

Agreed. 4G is a battery abuser. With the extended OEM HTC battery, I can actually go around 22-26 hours without charging the TBolt with 4G on, moderate use (Facebook, Twitter, G+, Skype and Yahoo Messenger all on). Yeah, it makes the phone pretty freakin' heavy (I had a universal GPS mount that I was using for the TBolt due to the extended battery and it basically caused the suction cup to just break off due to the weight of the phone!) but well worth it in terms of battery life. You can always go to just CDMA Only (3G) mode via settings>wireless networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode whenever you want the battery to go longer.

Of the numerous times I've spent any measurable amount of time in LTE (my area doesn't have it yet), only once did I notice an increased drain on the battery. And that was when the phone had pre-MR2 (June 10 leaked or official) software. I've actually noticed increased battery life with MR2 whether on 3G or LTE.

Thanks so much guys. I have settings set up to just get me through the day. Today was the 1st day with 4G so maybe it will get better. Before today I could make it all day during the week and just get on the yellow at bedtime. I have the sedio battery. Just not the huge ext one. Can't handle the bulge. Hope it gets better.

I also am getting a failed to locate message that just started today.

Let your phone go through a couple charging cycles first, your phone OS will adjust itself pretty well. (Setting the screen brightness to auto and some other little tweaks are always good too.) Now that you're in a 4g area you SHOULDN'T have the radio switching between 4g/3g all the time, THAT will kill your battery. I've had 4g since day 1, got my TB day one, and the first couple of days I would be lucky to get 3 hours out of a charge. But now I get 16+ with CONSTANT use, on my stock battery, (not the stock ROM though). If you are switching the radios back and forth you'll never let it calibrate your power usage, and your phone will never get good enough battery life out of 4g.

And of course you could always root and double your battery life if you wanted.

the phone nor the battery is new. do you think a few days will still help. i just don't get it. i have always been able to make it until at least 6 or 7 at night from 6 in the morning with no problem even if i am on the phone all day. now i am luck to make it until lunch on a charge with moderate use. when i check whats using the battery, voice calls are 1st at over 60%, display is next at around 30% and everything else is less than 5%. i have also noticed the phone getting hotter than normal even when not in use. it is not switching from 4 to 3 g at all, it stays 4g all day. i really don't want to root but can if its a only fix. i am thinking about wiping the phone just to make sure all is clean.

go to the settings in your various apps and turn any sync/update to the maximum interval or off completely.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 4G.

The claims in this thread are crap. No amount of charging will help. The OS does not 'adjust' to handle 4G better. It is what it is.

I suppose if you don't know anything about Android, or have any patience for trial and error, or have never done any real research, this would make sense.

It was a couple months before I finally rooted, and after I was finally convinced to ditch my task killer, and let 2.2 do its thing with power management, I went from 6 hours to 12 in about 6 charging cycles(3 days). And then after I rooted, like I said, I get 16+ no problem. But then again, I'm not new to Android, and have been playing around with all the things to tweak (in the Android OS) for more battery life for almost 2 years. If your radio bounces around, it'll eat your battery. If it doesn't and you get strong 4g continuously, give it time to adjust, and you'll see improvement.

Or just switch it to 3g and learn to deal with .89mgs dl times... I'm sitting right around 18mgs, I could never go back.

I know enough about Android to know that charging several times after a switch to 4G doesn't change a damn thing. Nor does the operating system adjust to using a different radio automatically over time. The power drain of any radio is a constant.

I didn't say anything about bouncing between 3G and 4G. That's no different than a radio searching for a signal draining a battery quickly which has been the case in every generation of cell phones.

Please don't tell me what I know and what I don't know in the future. I have no desire to have a contest with you to see who can be the biggest nerd.

The power drain of any radio is a constant.

Doubt it's all that constant since there are a lot of variables that can cause signal strength to fluctuate which would could cause the radio to use more power to get a stronger lock. Even sitting in the same spot, your battery life could vary from day to day with the same use.

Take it easy guys. Let's get back on topic. I wiped my phone and defragged my SD card. I am going to give it a few more days then the hell with 4G until it is working better. I have always had a bb or Android and got this over a iPhone just because I love Android and wanted 4G. Battery issues blow and my wife's iPhone stays charged for days and she talks about 2 hours a day. I guess its like a cool car. The faster they are the more gas they take.

Actually it does. Cory Streater is the one who actually showed me the light on this subject (due to my use and stance on task killers) because like you, I thought it didn't matter. But again, it does. Do a little research in the stickies before you give out bad advice. Even a new app that drains battery, the OS will recognize and monitor the power consumption and adjust after time.
