5.1.1 update for the D6603

Yeah, mine's unlocked! I never get contract phones, and I bought it for the camera and the sound quality, but it's starting to anoy me. All these tiny variations D6603, D????... It's frustrating, and TBH it's holding back Android as a serious OS. What's the real point of having all these stupid little variants. If Google want Android to be taken seriously they need to get past all this role out stupidity for OS updates...

Look at the manufacturers and carriers, not Google........they are the ones creating the variations with all their proprietary "shells" and skins that require tweaks AFTER Google releases updates. Nexus devices are updated very quickly which is why many people like them.

The problem is differentiation, without all the different variations they'd just be a Google phone that looked slightly different and maybe was a bit faster. As much as I both love and hate the little differences, there what makes each device individual and either good or not so good. The thing I really hate are cariers stuffing handsets with their junk apps, that really annoys me, and the whole variations on a team thing. D660X stuff, just have one damned handset with one OS and no bloatware!

Let me know if the Camera2 APIs are there or not. I've heard that they weren't and that is a real shame. But I'm not sure if it's region specific or not.

I haven't seen anything new in the camera settings.

You would have to try it out with a third party app like the Manual Camera Test app in the Play store.

I guess that confirms my sources then. Thanks.

No worries.

I get why people want the manual settings but I see all smartphone cameras as point and shoots. Even the L1020 and what comes after it.

I expect good pictures. Nothing more.

True and while I expect the same thing, I prefer having the option to get a shot that the camera may not be able to with the manual options especially when it's available to the OEM now. It's been in the Android Lollipop update since last year and it's a shame that Android leaves certain parts of an update as optional especially when it comes to new hardware. That is the bigger problem for me. And after owning a 1020 and a low level entry level DSLR, I really don't like to point and shoot all the time. That is why this will be the last Android phone I own. But it's been a great phone.

I've never had issues with low sound so I can't answer your question.

Not sure why you don't want the update. Lollipop allows apps on SD card again.

You could probably avoid the update completely if you want.

I don't know? The Samsung Galaxy Zoom is pretty much a camera with a phone attached to it. A point and click camera granted, but a camera none the less, it's the priority of the hardware :-)

My batterry life after 5.1 update is awful... Dont know how to downgrade to 5.0 where I had amazing batt.life. Tried factory reset but didnt help. Phone is faster, thats true, but dont want speed over batt.life.

The Galaxy Zoom is a niche device like the WP Lumia 1020.

You can't compare those to a typical smartphone camera, which is a point and shoot.

I do agree options are great and OEM's shouldn't be allowed to bypass APIs because they can't be bothered. (An issue that will eventually cause issues for OEM's but that's another topic.) However, majority of people won't bother with the manual settings or RAW imaging. So I can see why they don't put resources into it.

To most a nice picture is good enough in our over saturated media based lives.

I get it. I'm a photographer and I still chose the Z3 over the Zoom, mainly for the sound.quality, but it's nice that these things are out there. Android could easily become the defacto platform for both high and low end appliances from washing machines to cameras, but it's only worth doing if manufacturers stop trying to "make it there own". People like the idea of everything working in the same way, and TBH it's not that much to ask that if I know how to use one Android phone I should know how to use any Android phone. That's the whole point of having a modular design...
