I can't wait any longer, I'm going to flash 5.1.0 onto one N7.
I'll leave my other nexus 7 stock running 5.0.2 & see if there is a large or small difference in performance between the two. :)

As new to flashing.... what is the easiest way to do this?

I want to flash this, but can't seem to find an easy way to do it....

Some say the Nexus root tool.... But it just appears complicated... Just want to flash the 5.1.... not to root...

If you're computer savvy and familiar with programs like the Android SDK it's not that complicated but even I still have trouble from time to time :) that's why most ppl wait for the OTA to hit.
practice makes perfect though ;)
Its hard to totally screw up the Nexus 7 on wugs toolkit. Most cases you can always force flash the ROM you were currently on & be back in business. I always recommend watching a few of the video walkthroughs several times over before you attempt anything though.

Thanks for the boost in confidence.....

I flashed away and (as I know its still early) my Nexus 7 seems to back to life....

Pretty responsive and snappy for an old tablet.... As good as Kit Kat or Jelly Bean if not a much better...

So, if you are having lag issues or your "7" just doesn't seem responsive... 5.1 seems to have fixed some issues.... I have used chrome and it appears to operate fine and not slow things down.... Have yet to put facebook back on it to see if that causes issues...

Under 5.0.2 Facebook was a killer..... once i removed it, the tablet worked 100% better, but was still somewhat laggy,,

Dang you beat me :p :pSmarty:) Nice job!!! ;) its good to here things are going smoothly even if it is early.
I've been working on a tractor all morning... I just left my laptop downloading the new factory image.
Did you use the side load method on wugs toolkit? I got the little error that means it's not an OTA update and can't be sideloaded when I tried that method :(
I'll get back to it here soon - I bet by the time I do the OTA will be out ;)

Tried the wuggs and it kept throwing an adb server error.... So I went the sideloaded avenue... As it was my first time flashing via side loading, I was surprised how smooth it went!

Worth the extra work as little as it was!

Flashed it this morning, man I'm loving 5.1 :)
There is a big difference between the two tablets.
I'll try and make a short video demonstrating both of them before I flash the other one to 5.1

I have stayed away from Facebook and Facebook Messenger they're lucky to even be installed on my phone :)
I may add them to the mix just to see if I experience the same problem.

I don't think benchmarks are a good measure of performance vs actually running the apps you are using and navigating in your tablet. I wouldn't expect antutu to show much difference between 4.4, 5.0 and 5.1.

I believe you're correct ;) that's what someone else also stated elsewhere...

Oh & its great to hear the OTA is finally rolling out hpilot :)

I was going to wait few days to post a review but wow! My initial impression is that 5.1 is really good!

I might not need to flash a different kernel and just keep everything stock. And I haven't experienced a random reboot so far like I did with 5.0.2. (*Knock on wood)

BTW, for some reason the bootloader wouldn't flash so I just skipped flashing that and userdata and all is well

Some versions of 4.23 will fail to write no matter what you do. Its been a problem for some users for awhile now.
It seems to be included in all the latest stock images.

Facebook still chokes my nexus 7 on 5.1

Thanks for taking the bullet on FB. I was getting ready to try flashing 5.1 since my N7 was so useless after Lollipop. Then yesterday the OTA came. Saved me from having to force it on. Bad news is, I still froze after awhile using Chrome. I hadn't cleared the system cache before it locked up so I have now and will try it some more. I'm not going anywhere near FB based on your experience.

I woke to find the OTA 5.1 notification waiting on my N7. Downloaded, installed and let it 'optimize' the existing apps. It rebooted, I went into the Store and found a number of updates to my apps waiting. Did those. Used Ccleaner to do a tidy and then did a hard reboot.
Back up and running and everything seems fine so far - not sure if I'm seeing any speed or stability improvements over 5.0.2, or just willing it to be so.

If there is a worrying caveat, it's that I looked at the possibility of doing a Factory Reset just to make it as clean an install as possible, but there was no option to do it and restore all my apps from Backup at the same time, as was the case with 5.0.2. Hmm. Gave it a pass and will hope everything works out.

Flashing with Nexus Root Toolkit is soooo easy. The are plenty of how to's. I've re-flashed my N7 2012 at least 3 times now. The latest was to 5.1 with no wipe option.
