The phone does come with the advertised 128/512GB of storage, there is no deception, you just don't understand GB vs GiB.

Well, sorry -- that hasn't been that way with computers for a long time due to formatting + system. Nothing new at all.

Was about to say the same thing. They didn't reinvent the wheel. You're still getting plenty of space with the 512gb.

Why is this an issue? Why can't ppl just enjoy what you bought? I don't understand all of the complaining every year at release time when 2 days before, you couldn't wait to get it in your hands. Relax or return it.

I have the 128gb version and my used is about 26gb and about 21gb of that seems to be system. If you look at the usage to storage size percentage it seems proportional to the size of storage. That said, it's most likely some kind of system cache or similar. As has already been said, the advertised size is just that, the actual usable size is always less. it has always been this way (i think SanDisk actually started this practice way back in the day)

All carriers should show similar system usage. Verizon could be worse by a little bit but plus/minus 1-2 gb would be my guess

The ROM is 512 GB, that's what you're buying. Amount available to the user is always less. But the reason there are different terms is that 1 GB is 2^30 while 1 GiB, which is also sometimes listed as GB is 10^9. That's why a conversion is necessary, because those are very different values.

It used to be that storage was advertised with a footnote that actual formatted capacity may be less.

The other factor may be Project Treble, if Samsung is doing that with this device. There are actually TWO system partitions, an A and a B (which you will never see both at the same time). When the phone updates, you can still use it while the idle partition is updated, once the update is done and you reboot it actually boots to the updated partition. If the boot is successful, the partition you were using when the update installed is then updated.

There was always the "19" screen, 17" viewable" in the advertising, they weren't misleading anyone except those that didn't read everything.

Getting back to Post #1 , I think you missed something. Take a look in that circle again. "SYSTEM/USER DATA". USER. That's apps, documents, pictures, etc. They're adding them together and giving you the total. That's not system data or system space alone. 10GB for user apps. And if Samsung went along with the system a/b scheme, that's 2 complete Android partitions and 2 complete vendor partitions, so 50 - 10 (for apps) is 40, split is 20GB set aside for both Android and Samsung stuff. So 20, not 50.

(Someone should get Dianne Hackborn at Google to write an article about the a/b scheme, so people who want to understand it can learn.)

this is no different than a few years ago when someone sued home depot over the dimensions of lumber. a 2x4 is actually 1 7/8 x 3 3/4. Has been since, a long time ago.

I do not think it's a carrier thing.

My unbranded 512Gb N9 uses that amount of storage too.
