My friend at work has the same phone as me. Model Sm-g975u. S10 plus. His screen has been showing 5g up at the top for the connection. He says its faster now. How is his phone showing that? My location is Littleton Massachusetts. Seems impossible.

He's probably on AT&T and its showing the AT&T fake 5g. They set up their phones to show 5g even though they are only running on LTE.

Welcome to Android Central! Does it say "5G" or "5GE"? As racedog alluded to, 5GE is what AT&T calls 4G now, because people are gullible.:p

"AT&T has now switched on its ‘5G Evolution’ service meaning a ‘5Ge’ symbol will appear in the corner of Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, LG V30, and LG V40 devices. For everyone else in the world, ‘5G Evolution’ is 4G LTE-Advanced, though AT&T feels the need to intentionally try to mislead customers, fooling them into believing they are receiving 5G data services.

Why AT&T feels it is appropriate to deceive its customers so blatantly is beyond us."

Additional info: I'm on Verizon and he is on AT&T. Doing a few speed tests. He is getting around 20-22mbps and im getting 32-45. Wifi off of course.

It's like racing stripes -- it makes your car feel faster.;)

Sprint activated 5G today in NYC and its amazingly fast.
I know Verizon is faster but for I'm paying for on Sprint witha the 3rd 4th and 5th lines free I'll take the 5G speeds.

I've had Sprint since the 4G WiMax days. I downloaded an episode of Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj in 5 seconds it was finished. That's pretty impressive.

Anyone esle have 5G out here in NYC I'm in Queens so the speeds in the city should be faster.

"Had you had 5G, it would be enabled here" and "Your phone only supports 4G, but it's coming through on a 5G network / band" are also legitimate explanations. It is an advertising ploy that has not updated for the current mindset of the typical user (see below).

In the earlier days of Android, this would spark you to Google some combination of words including 5G that would give your carrier a chance to advertise the benefits and possibly persuade you into purchasing a new phone or upgrading service. This was a strategy from a time before the average user would simply began ranting that they were tricked into thinking they had a free service enhancement.
