Is there or will there be a 5G update available for a Galaxy S9+ instead of having to purchase a new phone in order to get the 5G broadband services?

5G is hardware dependent on the radios, so no it's not possible to upgrade an older phone to use it. You will have to buy a new compatible phone, but I wouldn't worry for about another year at least. 5G is still pretty new and coverage will be spotty for some time. For most users, there won't be much of a noticeable difference anyway. 4G is already plenty fast enough to do everything.

I have noticed that when I'm not at my house connected to my Wi-Fi that the 5G is showing up on my my Galaxy S9+ causing my phone to be extremely slow or not able to do anything.

Wi-Fi isn't 5G. That sounds like the 5GHz frequency, which is a separate thing all together. The slow speed could be due to a bad configuration, or just a slow connection to the ISP (the Wi-Fi router doesn't control your bandwidth, your ISP does).

Thanks Mooncat, I'm aware.
The op might be leaving wifi on and sees the 5G there, as I do, shown below.

AT&T call their 4G data 5GE. People think they have 5G when it is just 4G. If they were in the UK they wouldn't be able to do that as it is false advertising.

OP, take a screen shot, then turn your WiFi Off in the Connections through the Settings menu. Take a 2nd shot Disable auto reconnect. Post both.
You can, if wanted, go to Developer Options and toggle on the option I have circled.
Good luck
