So one thing I discovered pretty quickly is that the volume level audio out jack on the 5X seems pretty low. Then I tried my BT headphones, and the volume on BT is MUCH louder. Anybody else experience this?
It's all going to depend on the headphones you use. Higher impedance headphones need an amplifier or DAC because the headphone output on the phone can't sufficiently power them.
Cheaper headphones with a lower impedance will actually sound louder than the nicer headphones will believe it or not.
Edit:
One thing I forgot to mention is that the Bluetooth headsets have their own amplifiers built in, and generally do get louder than your standard passive headphones.
If you have a really nice pair of headphones that you would like to use with the Nexus I suggest you look for a miniature USB DAC. There's a really good one on Massdrop right now.

The DAC would cost way more than my headphones, which are were around $80 years ago, and I think a really nice pair of BT phones would be a better economical choice. I'm more concerned to get the volume when I'm on the move anyway and I'm certainly not going to get a portable dac. I like good sound but not *that* much.
Might I suggest Jaybird BlueBuds. They are not cheap, but man they sound good. Mix them with Comply Foam Comfort tips, and you got a great work out set of headphones. My fat azz and I go running with them every day.
When streaming music to my Bluetooth speaker from my 5x it restricts it to a certain volume even though the Bluetooth speaker can go much higher.
When I play the music from my Nexus 7 tablet the music is perfect and its not low and doesn't restrict me from putting the volume to the max of what the Bluetooth speaker can handle.
