Maybe, maybe not, do the math. That's a bundled contract deal, what do they charge for BYOD vs the bundled contract price? In the US the carriers have followed T-Mobile's lead and unbundled the phones from the plans and offer the phones on time payments (for example at Verizon the 64G iPhone6S plus is $850 over 24 months).

Here they usually finance 480 of the phones value. If you bring your BYOD they deduct 20 a month from your plan over the 2 years, so it's the same amount. At least that's how it works at Telus.

Phones in Canada are primarily sold on a 2 year term. Premium tab phones(galaxy's, iPhones) are +20, regular phones (pretty much everything else) are +10 on your monthly bill. BYOD as mentioned before you save 20.
