6p or S7

Get the 6P then see what really comes from Samsung then if it fits you then buy the S7. If you keep waiting for the latest and greatest then you will keep waiting. You wait 4+ months for the S7 and when that time comes, the Note 5 will be announced a few months later so might as well wait and if your waiting then wait for the new Nexus and it just keeps going on and on.

I've had an LG the past two years and really enjoyed it. I had a Samsung two years before that. My wife, on the other hand has had Samsung for the past six years and really likes every phone she has had. Now with that said, even she said that there is not a Samsung out there she would get. All the former benefits of having a Samsung (such as advanced features ahead of other phones) have really dissipated in the last year or so, with all the new phones out there now. To me, Samsung has gotten to be as boring as an iPhone. There's nothing really special and frankly the build quality is only average. I got the 6p and love my first Android phone. My wife got the LG V10 and she probably won't go back to Samsung after using her LG and using my phone.

Now, on a side note, the one phone that almost made me not get the Nexus (which I'm VERY happy with, btw) and wait for a phone was the LG G5. The V10 isn't a bad phone, but it is ever so slightly bigger than the 6p that to me it barely crosses that line of too big. Not to mention, it is a little gimmicky and high priced. What I've seen about the G5 looks like it will be a flagship phone for 2016 and not quite as big as the 6p. But I digress.

The 6P is the best phone available today, the S7 will have better hardware but so will the 2016 Nexus which will follow the S7 by about 6 months. As everyone says the big advantage of a Nexus is that you get the latest software immediately, with Samsung the delay will be many months. The other software advantage is that Google supports Nexus phones much longer than Samsung supports their phones.

The S7 will have a Snapdragon 820 which has much faster single core performance than the 810 in the 6P however the question is will the difference be noticeable, I doubt it. Processor performance has been good enough for a long time. The performance of the 6P is as snappy as you would want it to be, but so was the N5 which had a processor that was 40% slower than the 6P, the Internet is the limiting factor not the CPU. The screen on the 6P is a 2K AMOLED, I don't think there will ever be a screen that's significantly better. The DPI of a 2K screen is beyond the limits of the human eye so there isn't any point to more pixels. It's also plenty bright, but I suppose you could make a brighter screen. Battery life on the 6P is decent but obviously there is room to improve on all phones and I doubt the S7 will be better than the 6P in this regard.

I only buy Nexus phones because they are the easiest to root if need be and they always have the latest software.

Good points. We've already reached the performance ceiling for hardware. Even were the S7 to have an s820 and 4GB of RAM, it's still not going to run any faster than the N6P which runs as fast as a smartphone is going to get for a few years to come so you won't find any gains there. And as bjrosen mentioned earlier, the 2016 Nexus will be out 6 months after the S7 anyway, so why put up with bloatware and update delays that have been a problem for Samsung and others for years when instead of buying an S7 in the Spring you can have a N6P now?

We have no idea at all what will be in the S7 but even if it ends up with a better battery, camera, display, etc I can pretty much guarantee you that they will only be slightly better because Samsung will never future-proof themselves out of selling you the S8 in 2017. What I do know what will happen with the S7 is that with those slight upgrades you will still remain stuck with Touchwiz, Samsung bloatware, Carrier bloatware, and updates that are months behind. None of the incremental upgrades they can throw at it will ever make up for that.

I had the Nexus 6 for a minute and the camera and shamu attributes turned me off. I always find myself giving Samsung another try. Despite the lack of control, carrier interference, slow updates etc.. The features are attractive initially and they make some beautiful screens and the camera was amazing on my S6. The razzle dazzle and hype wins me over. But with my Sansung devices, I find they **** me off the most after a half a year of ownership. Somehow it turns into a laggy mess.

There is also this ongoing issue with the phone automatically closing apps out due to an overly aggressive memory management system. Can't listen to spotify, navigate and send a dang text at the same time with one of them just automatically closing.
And then there is an annoying issue with push notifications not working when the phone is sleep and connected to wifi.
Because of this I will am going to try to avoid the S7. Seems like the Nexus line has finally matured into what I have always wanted. I am loving my 6P to death and so glad I dumped my S6

Yeah for some reason they still struggle with RAM management (their resolution is to simply just add more). I agree with the 6 month mark. I keep my phones 2-3 years, and would never recommend a Samsung to anyone planning to keep it longer than a year. The lag is annoying and TW gets old quick. I know it's better than it once was, but IMO it's still a mess.

I think the ultimate solution would be for Samsung to do another Google Play edition version of a phone. This time, a Note would be VERY welcome. Not a Note 5 type, more like the Note 4 in terms of design and features. That would've interested me over the 6P, but I have no regrets saying see ya to Samsung.

If you want to try Pure stock Google then 6p. Have the specs of the S7? Come out. Currently out there 6p is hard to beat.

I am not spending more money to give more of my privacy away to Google. Not buying any google made phone.

At least sammi's presence provides a blocker between flow of your info and google's server.

If you are waiting till March for S7, I would wait till fall for the next Nexus, then probably wait few more months for S8 and so on ....

Were you windows phone user? :)

You may want to check your facts a little deeper about that strategy ;)
Hint: you can start by finding out where and how Samsung uses their servers for the built in apps and background services on Touchwiz (ss in the baked in parts, not the UI) that have internet connectivity.

Secondly, Samsung does not "provide a blocker" of any sort. Does your Samsung device have Google Search and Play Services? Yes. There's nothing built into Samsung android software that does anything to interfere with either.

You're going to want to avoid everything that's not an Amazon Fire Phone. iOS, Android and Windows all have this as a thing and, within Android, Nexus devices are the most secure and collect the least data by default. Replace assumptions with facts.

If you use any of the Google services or anything of that nature there is no blocker just because it is Samsung. Android is Google's OS which Samsung uses.

Also comparing full price -- the 6P is usually cheaper than the Samsung.

I
f you are that concerned about your data being collected by Google Services, between the two phones, only one will easily allow you to wipe the stock firmware and replace it with a version of Android that has no hooks back into Google's servers...

I have a 6p and love it. Its my favorite android phone of all time and I have owned pretty much most of the flagships over the years. I also just sold and s6 edge plus which was also very good. The Samsung hardware beats the nexus except for the finger print sensor. Its faster and the camera is significantly better on samsung. Maybe not is image quality but definitely in speed. The camera is a big deal to me and the s6 beat the nexus hands down for my needs. Given that the s7 will have an even faster camera I will probably sell my 128 6p and move over to the s7. In an ideal world I would have the 6p software on the samsung hardware as long as I did not have to give up on the camera software working as well as it does using samsug's build.
