$799 for the Xoom? Ouch!

Even at $200 more than the full retail price of the Droid X, the Xoom price made total sense. People are just delusional.

I have never paid more then $99 for any phone. This counts my Droid and Droid 2, my wife's Eris and Incredible.

Get smart people! I am not paying for my Xoom. Alltel is just now changing to ATT this week and everybody is just going to throw their Alltel phones away. Well all I have to do is ask them if they would like to recycle them and then they give them to me. There are many people with HTC desires. Best Buy is offering $90 giftcard for used Desires. Also many people have HTC Wildfires and Best Buy gives about $70 I think for those. Just a couple desires, wildfires, heros, blackberries and I have my Xoom paid for!

Why would they throw them away. Why don't they get the gift cards.

What gift cards??? I don't think Alltel is giving gift cards. If you are talking about Best Buy then it is because they probably don't know about it. We don't have a Best Buy that is close.

You are dismissing the fact that Motorola officially announced during CES and even won best of show. They have listed all the typical specs for a device one would give the public and the press: the CPU, clock speed, memory sizes, peripherals, accessories, etc...

You're also dismissing the fact that they nearly went under.... I mean gone! Seriously. Motorola was bleeding serious red ink for years. They luckily hit another winner with Droid, but if that had been six months later, Motorola would not be there today. So much for their amazing success machine. RAZR to brink of bankruptcy to Droid.

Not started marketing yet? Their website has been live since early January. They've released videos of it. They've released it to famous people to carry around, show off, tweet with it, and get buzz going. They've sent units around the world on a road show so the press can report hands-on experience. The device was featured in Google's intro of Honeycomb. Motorola spend million$ on a major SuperBowl commercial. Actual store arrival is just 12 tiny days away! Whatever... We'll just have to agree to disagree because is seems abundantly clear to both of us, yet we see things 180 degrees from each other.

The real news is it looks pretty clear that Motorola is going full steam ahead with the $799 price. I was hoping their strategy was to head-fake to $799, but actually release lower. It's pretty clear any hope of that is fading quickly.

The plan is still to purchase on arrival day (hopefully still the 24th). I'll be on a 20+ hour flight on the 26th. My head will explode if I don't have a new XOOM with me to play with.

The next thing to hope is for Motorola will make a pre-order announcement during Mobile World Conference in Barcelona.

BTW, dumped half my holdings of MMI today. Success of Motorola's tablet business is no longer a sure thing in my mind and being 20% of their stock value... the risk versus reward is out of wack. The $799 price, coupled with zero effort to justify it to the market will significantly harm shipping numbers, IMHO.

You're mistaking tech "news" with advertising. Remember, we're a minority of users. Most people don't read blogs, they certainly don't read tech sites. The average customer who talks to me about "android" only knows what they see on TV, and these are tech savvy users.

The average consumer has NO idea what CES is. Those specs were given on a spec sheet, what NO ONE READS.

They have a website, so what? Have you SEEN what motorola does for ads? not only do they do TV spots, but they take out full page ads in papers, they do radio spots.. have you seen any of that yet? (without the teaser trailer) No.

Look at MOTOROLA's Track record for announcing devices.

They NEVER start advertising a device until it's available. Every ad they do up until that point is a teaser ad. Something meant to generate INTEREST, not sales.

Look at their advertising for the Original Droid and the Droidx if you don't believe me. I see what you're trying to say, but you're completely missing the company. This is how they operate, it's how they've operated for well over a year.

And remember, Motorola and Verizon HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED THE PRICE. Heck, best buy hasn't. This is a LEAKED SHEET that again, maybe 10% of the potential buyers will see or hear about.

We will have to agree to disagree. We see the same things, yet I believe they have indeed started their advertising campaign and I believe the news that's being generated will indeed have a detrimental result on their shipping numbers.
Again, we are both convinced, but are 180 out of phase.

I think the one thing we may agree on is if they go ahead with a release priced at $799 + tax + mandatory one month service, there will be a tepid response from the masses. It won't stop me from buying on arrival day, but IMHO many others may think more than twice.

The mandatory fee is something put there by best buy, meaning that other stores won't require it (though most will) There is nothing in the OS that requires it. I am in the middle of training, and it tells me how to bypass activation if you just want wifi. Best buy might turn off some customers with that ad, but it's not the device so motorola shouldn't do any cleanup for that. :)

If it's going to be available at Costco like I've read, I think I'll wait until they have it, since I have a membership.

LOL love this idea

"Brief" it is! That's the shortest article I've ever seen.

Personally, I think the XOOM will be $799.99 everywhere, and I'm fine with that given the other prices of tablets we've heard recently:

HTC Flyer = $730 (after conversion and subtraction of VAT)

HP TouchPad = $699 (rumored)

Galaxy Tab 10.1 = ??? (but their lack of a price for a product launching next month indicates it will be no less expensive than the XOOM)

At first I thought that the price tag was a bit much, but I'm actually starting to realize that it might be a bit unrealistic to expect to see $400 or $500 premium tablets, especially going forward. I'm fine with the price at this point.

I agree with you...a $400 price is right for a high end netbook...these things run circles around them. Eventually the market will get saturated but right now I think it's about right. I want this puppy as it seems to be the best for HDMI out.

Think I'll wait till the summer then jump when the next iPad is out. Price should drop then.
