802.11AC on the S4

Yep. Unless you absolutely have to have faster file transfer with your phone on your network, I don't think it's worth upgrading from 802.11n just yet. Your internet speeds won't be much faster (if any).

I am also considering getting a 802.11ac router - to speed up wireless sync with videos etc. on external SD card. However, the best 64GB microSD card that I could buy (Class-10 UHS-1 speed) - gave 10MB/s write and 20MB/s read speed. That translates to 80 Mbps and 160Mbps respectively. I think 802.11n speed will probably not be the bottle-neck in this case (especially if you have full wi-fi signal on your phone).

I even streamed the HD videos to my PC's DLNA client (with iMediashare app on the Galaxy S4) - and that worked flawlessly - I think the best HD video recording is still <20Mbps bit-rate. So, again I doubt if 802.11n speed is bottle-neck here.

The only usage that I can think of in which 802.11ac router may help out is to do wireless sync with a folder on the internal storage (i.e. not the external SD card). The internal storage write/read speed is much faster than external SD card - so there going from 802.11n to 802.11ac may actually make a difference.

Hey, why not get the fastest speeds if u can? If the phone can take it, why not? lol I'm sure its some noticeable difference

I have the Netgear R6300 router with AC connectivity but cannot get my S4 to connect to it at 802.11N - maximum speed I get is 54Mbps which is 802.11g. I'll mess around with it a little more, didn't see the option for 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz because 802.11AC runs on the 5GHz band.

As far as I know different classes of N exist ... 150, 300, 450 and 600 o think. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I think AC can push into 1000 territory. What router do toy have?

I have a Belkin AC1200 router.

I have the 2.4GHz set to 802.11n and the 5GHz set to 802.11ac.

With my S4 connected to the either one I get the same speeds, 31 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload. Doesn't matter which, they're both smokin' fast.
