808 vs. 810 processor...Your reaction?

Right now, I'm more worried about the GPU than the SD808.

However, regarding the 808 itself I'm a bit worried regarding multi tasking for productivity users.

I really don't see it being noticed unless you are trying to play a game like World of Tanks on the QHD screen.... even my Note 4 has trouble w that one sometimes. Browsing the Web shouldn't even notice.

As a Moto x user (have had both) I know that benchmarks make little difference in real world use, for most people. So, I don't care what they used as long as it's snappy for normal stuff. The only game I play on my phone is hearthstone, and that doesn't need anything fancy for graphics capability.

The S6 doesn't actually multitask very well despite 3gb ram it closes apps and refreshes them when you switch. Watch the M9 obliterate it in the second lap of this video:

The G4 will be absolutely fine. I don't expect any noticeable difference

G4 is an incremental upgrade over the G3.4gb ram would have been preferred, 4k screen would also have been nice because 4k would look sharper and better than the current 1440p, more powerful gpu would have been preferred, ability to make coffee for me in the morning would also have been preferred but oh well...

No. 4K will make very little to no difference on a smartphone screen.

The G3 and G4's ppi is already at a milky-way 538ppi. That's far higher than other smartphones minus the Galaxy S6/HTC One M9+. Put both 1080p and 1440p side-by-side and you'll struggle to see the difference. It's noticeable but less so compared to 720p vs 1080p.

Adding 4K is pointless. It makes a difference that only people with microscopic vision can see (which means it's very near-impossible to see any difference) and only serves to increase battery consumption, meaning more frequent recharges. It makes more sense on large tablets, as the higher resolution screen on a larger screen size means the difference is more noticeable and their larger size means that they can fit a larger battery.

Also, note that these smartphones have much higher PPIs than 4K TVs, mainly due to their much smaller size. For reference. the LG 49UB8500 4K UHD TV has a PPI of 89.91.

For the average user it should be good, but for the heavy users and gamers they may want to rather go Galaxy S6 or HTC One M9 going by the benchmarks at the bottom here:

Prise en main du LG G4, à la recherche de la différence - FrAndroid

The GPU in the 808 is the Adreno418, its weaker than even the Adreno420 in the Nexus 6 and Note 4, and much weaker than the S810's Adreno430.

AnandTech mention the GPU does suffer from a drop in performance vs. 430:
LG Announces the G4: 5.5-inch QHD with Snapdragon 808

Forget the damn benchmarks how about real world experience with a phone I like anandtech but they approach their phone reviews the same way they approach pc hardware and it's not the right way to do it period. But I'm glad LG put the 808 in it and it looks like a great phone.

Do you care about using the phone at all for at least 1 minute without charging it lol

It's a step down no one will notice unless you run benchmarks all damn day

Anandtech are so technical in their reviews that they can't see the wood from the trees

Yep,

This is why Apple are still doing well, they haven't got the best hardware but they optimize it so heavily that they don't need the best specs.

Unfortunately, when you are relying on Android as your core, I don't know to what extent you can optimize the software when all you can actually alter is what you add on to the OS. eg touchwiz, Sense etc

Hey the benchmarks are phoney anyway manufacturers have figured out how to cheat them anyway. I'm sure the G4 will be plenty quick enough and hopefully will avoid the touch wiz lag.

What is your reaction to the 808 going in the G4? Good move? Bad move? Sound off below.

As for me, I think it was probably a good move.

Good move because the 810 looks like a turd that qualcomm dropped. yes it may not be as beastly in performance, but the other tradeoffs (less heat, throttling are well worth it IMO)

You can optimize Android specifically for your hardware, it's based on Linux (uses the same kernel).

I'm with you. I'm so tired of websites and posters throwing out benchmarks and claiming X phone is faster on benchmarks therefore it's a faster device. It's simply not true. You have to use the phone and experience its performance.

LG G4 to me looks like a great phone. Really interested in checking it out.

I expect neglible difference in performance, even in heavy use. Maybe heavy gamers might be affected a tiny amount, but who games seriously on a smartphone?! Any gamer worth his salt would play on a dedicated gaming device, not a crappy smartphone screen with awful controls. The only games that work well on smartphones are word games and such, not live action games.

It's pretty hard to distinguish yourself from the crowd based on performance because how benchmarks translate to real life usage is subjective. The leather will stand out for this device, and probably the screen and camera if they can shout loud enough about them.

Don't forget the S6 is a fragile glass phone. Glass never ends well.

I'm a mobile gamer. Moved to it from my ps3/xbox360. It's perfect for work/life balance.

I'll see if the G4 has taken a hit in gaming performance versus my G3. Can't wait to get one.

No real difference in CPU.
The two CPU's that were removed are not the A53 CPU. It was the power efficient A57.
So when the heavy lifting is going on the 4-A53 processors will be running full out.
On the 810 you will never be able to run all eight processors "balls to the wall". You will get throttled due to heat anyway.

Other than the GPU differences you will not notice any difference in performance.

The A57 are not power efficient bud, those are the powerful 'big' cores, the A53s are the power efficient 'little cores'. The 808 has 4 A53 low power cores and 2 A57 high power cores, the A57s are the ones that are power hungry, they are the reason why ARM Developed the Hexa Core and Octa Core configuration as if the chip only had A57 it would have major thermal issues.

The A53s do most of the work but when the work gets heavy the A57s are thrown in e.g. when browsing a heavy web page, playing games, taking pictures etc... Some chip makers like MediaTek have Octa Core CPUs based on 8 A53 cores, thats to keep production costs down and power consumption low.

The Snapdragon 810 has 4 A53 and 4 A57 as well as a more powerful GPU, BUT the A57 cores heat up far too quickly when active, causing aggressive CPU throttling and causing the phone to drop down to the A53s quickly.

I'm one of those that don't pay attention to numbers like these.

At the end it's still an improvement over last year's.
