From Phil's review:

"there's an extra 6.6 gigabytes of storage (which for some reason Verizon is still reporting as 8 gigs, even with a footnote explainer) that you can use for music, video, photos, whatever. (At the time of this writing, apps are still constrained to the 512MB of ROM -- more than enough for more people, but something Google has promised to address in future updates to Android.)"

yea, this really bums me out.

also, engadget has said that some apps can't see the internal storage, so the ones that use the sd card for data have issues.

so i guess for a really seamless experience one should throw a small microSD card in there just for good measure.

but whatever, 748mb of phone storage is plenty for now. :)

My guess is that its 8GB partitioned into two separate storages... Internal EXT for apps and internal fat32. That would put it at the correct ammount of space after formatting.
8Gb is really ~7.3GB formatted at 1024MB=1GiB
6.6GB + 0.748GB = 7.35GB
6.6GB + 0.512 = 7.112GB
Both are reasonable assumptions and can validate VZW's marketing of 8GB internal storage.

Google needs to really address the elephant in the room sooner than later; Apple / Palm is killing in terms of gaming. I am hoping for two things... Android devices start shipping with a min of 8gb internal which can have apps installed to instead of the 512ish partions we currently are getting with the latest generation; secondly, FroYo starts allowing for installation to the SD card (ala A2SD).

I can imagine that developers will possibly patch their applications to support it as I see the internal storage with expansion capabilities becoming the norm rather than exception.

Only time will tell though, but I can imagine that Verizon's android user-base will grow considerably with this device coupled with the Droid. Then the true test of growth will be how it holds up to the impending verizon iphone announcement.

Will there be any less of a battery hit using the internal storage rather than the SD card for intensive things such as playing music?

My Dare said to put frequently accessed items on the phone's memory rather than SD card due to battery considerations, which is where my question came from.

i'm sure it helps a little, but probably not a whole lot.

being that you have 6GB of free space that you can't really use for much else, you might as well put the music on there though. :)

Pardon the stupidity of the question, but anyways.

With the 512 fro apps really be all 512? It seems I read some where that my Tour would have 512, but is reall cut down to 256, and the phone suffers if Im not paying attention....I have a problem downloading things to try it out, or as a demo in at work.

In case you miss the article Phil just posted:

There's been a little bit of confusion regarding some of the specs of the Verizon*Droid Incredible. Let's clear up on of them.*On every info sheet we've received, ROM -- aka the place to which you can install applications -- is listed at 512 megabytes. When you dive into the phone settings on the device, however, you'll see listed 740MB of "phone storage."

So what gives? HTC*now tells us that you should actually be able to install apps to that space, which is a pleasant treat, indeed!

iirc, with the tour it was 512 total with 256 being ram and 256 being rom

it's been a while since i've looked at blackberrys though, but i think this was what happened.

for this phone the original specs were 512 ram and 512 rom, which would leave usable space a little lower since the OS is installed on the same space. but from what seems to be the case now, there is more space than that, so there is 700+mb free after the os is on there. which is plenty of space for the size of apps that are on the platform at the moment.
