I wonder what other corners they will cut besides having the processor only be a single core? This would be an ideal gift for kids.

Well, there's no mention of screen size, so I'm going to guess at maybe dropping the screen to 5 inches, possibly even as low as 4. Almost certainly no rear-facing camera or a crappy one if so, very unlikely there'll even be a front-facing camera. Minimal memory with little chance for expansion. Chances are there won't be any more graphics horespower than what is minimally needed for Jellybean and maybe Key Lime Pie. They'll probably go with a raised plastic bezel rather than the sexier N7 glass-on-metal.

But I imagine the specs will still ensure a pretty good experience, and at $100 they'll open the market to a whole new class of consumers, just like the Nexus 7 did.

I don't see why they would drop the size of the screen. You can already get $99 7" android tablets. They're not great, I got one before the Nexus 7 was released (it was actually a little more than $99 at the time), compared to the Nexus 7 they're rubbish, but if it is all you can afford, it will do the job. I'm kind of surprised that Google is willing to put their name on something so cheap, I can't imagine a device made so cheaply will reflect well on their brand name, but maybe they can make it decent.

speculation on that "product" is sure to waste many man hours--to what purpose?

Maybe a older dual core. Dunno why they would go single core. Would seem to make sluggish and diminish the nexus name even if its a 99$ tab. Also lower the screen res. Smaller battery. Entry level devices still need to work smooth.

Simple. Theorizing that this device actually ever comes to see the light of day, Google wants a Nexus experience, not a Pantech Digital experience or a SuCoMo DisposaTab experience. This is not going to be a Kobe, this is going to be a Nexus.

For $100, they are not going to build a 7" screen of any quality whatsoever. But drop it to 4-5" (cut the screen size in half) and your screen cost goes WAY down so you still can build a good-quality screen.

If it ever exists, at that price point - this is going to be Google's foray into a competitor for the iPod Touch. Not the iPad.

At that size and price point, that does make sense. It could attract a demographic that doesn't have a smart phone, for cost or other reasons, and that can't justify more than $100 for an electronic toy. It might be successful as a gateway drug device, especially when people can trade up and keep their Play store purchases. .

I am afraid if a cheap tablet will just ruin the nexus experience for new users. Last thing google needs is to blunder something up.

Well speaking for myself and my family, we're not getting another tablet for a long time, and while a $99 N7 might be worth getting, based on what is left in it, I can't imagine replacing my existing N7 with it. That said, for someone who might never have gotten a tablet, it might convince a few more people into getting one, who aren't interested in a $200+ model.

If they drop the screen to 4 or 5 inches, it can't really function as a tablet, can it? If they're making a $100 tablet, they won't be cutting the screen size.

+1

4-5 inches, you're going back into cell phone territory. While not everyone has a smart phone yet, they want to expand on the tablet territory. Otherwise I find it redundant to have a phone and something as small as 4-5". One thing that makes 7" a happy medium. It's larger than your phone but much more comfortable and personal than a 10" +.

Well, remember, we are all theorizing based on an item that may or may not exist. My theoretical chain assumes that Google is building a "Nexus"-experience device.

That means a decent build quality. I'd hope Google wouldn't simply want to put a swirly X startup screen on a Pantech or Kobe with an 800x600 resolution resistive screen. They will also have to build a device with enough underlying horsepower to take Android upgrades for at least a couple of years. That's part of the Nexus promise.

Obviously the $99 price means they want to sell a lot of them, but I expect they'll also want to set pricing so they aren't subsidizing half or two thirds of the cost and losing $100 on each unit.

The processor is not the bulk of the cost of the Nexus 7. If they want to cut the price in half, they'll have to make a lot more compromises than merely cutting three cores out of the processor. But if they start making a crappy screen or cutting memory too much, it's not going to be a Nexus experience, and they'll be cutting off their own future sales by selling a junk knockoff as a Nexus unit.

So, given the hypothetical existence of this possible $99 Nexus tablet, I'm going to take a wold guess and say that screen size is going to have to be one of the compromises Google will have to make. If they make some of the alternative compromises to meet the price tag, it ain't gonna be a Nexus.

I could be wrong. But the whole thread is based on a rumor of a tablet that Google may never bring to light, and it may never have been on their to-do list to start with. I just can't imagine them selling something that looks like a Nexus 7 with a slightly lowered processor at a $75 per unit loss, or sullying the Nexus brand with a product that Pandigital or Kobi would barely acknowledge as theirs.

A single core nexus wouldn't be a tablet, not even a 7"mini tab, but more so an android counterpart to the iPod touch

Not necessarily, it's speculated in this article that it will be 7" with single core.

Digitimes says entry-level $99 Nexus 7 to feature single-core 800 MHz processor | Android and Me

Yup, so his uninformed speculation disagrees with my wild guess, as do several other wild guesses on this thread. And there's at least one other thread on this forum that refers to the $99 device as the "Nexus 5" and an iPod Touch competitor.

It's all speculation until Google comes out and says "$99 tablet? Dafuq you talkin' about? We didn't plan jack for no hundred clams? You smokin'?" :-!

Apparently, Kobo suffers from some brand recognition problems as you alternately refer to them as Kobe and Kobi. :p

[edit]: It's actually an anagram of "book".

LOL! Good point, thanks for the clarification. :)

The Kyros (did I get that right at least) wasn't a BAD tablet - several friends owned them and they were pretty happy with them. But a Nexus device it ain't.
