A camera hatchet job?

One could also argue that the reviewer has a responsibility to deviate from the marketing material when reviewing a phone.

She also could show us readers what the camera can really do given the camera is the focus of her review. Harping on the less than stellar auto performance while pushing manual mode aside makes for a "meh" review imo.

There's an entire section on manual mode.

You guys are spending way too much time debating this article. Looks like she spent no more than 1 hour flopping a few photos together, and strung a few paragraphs on paper, and called it a day.

That's a pretty solid review. Shows the highlights and faults of 4 of the top cameras on cell phones in full auto HDR.

Any phone with manual camera controls should be fully capable of impressive pictures when you have the setup time to use it properly.

That's why auto mode matters more IMO. Most of the time you don't have the setup time.

I'll have to agree with some on here.

While the V20 has a terrific set of manual controls out of the box (especially for adjusting audio), its JPEG processing, auto mode and lens quality still leave a bit to be desired.

The phone is very nice, especially for some one like Juan Carlos Bagnell, who shot the entire Axon 7 Mini unboxing on a V20. But I feel that LG could stand to improve the auto mode for those times when you just want to take a quick snap.

The one thing I didn't understand was the V20 being called LG's "not-quite-a flagship".

I don't like the measure how it's marketed approach. You can check their claims in addition to standard testing, but not sure that's even necessary. Otherwise you could make a camera that is absolute garbage in all but one scenario - macro shots of coins on grass in spring time sunlight - and then say it's the best ever camera at getting those shots... and that's pretty weak.

The best camera out there is going to be the one that you slide out of your pocket and consistently get photos that look how you wanted them to without any weird effort on your part.

The best sensor on the otherhand, is going to be the hardware/processing combination that matches reality the best in controlled condition. Maybe the V20 is good at that in manual?

Maybe they consider the G5 to be the flagship and the V20 is something more specialized ... or something, I dunno. IMO the V20 is better than the G5 in just about ever way.

In that regard, would the Galaxy S be considered the flagship and the Note be considered something else?

Anyway, yes. I agree that the V20 is much better than the G5 in pretty much every way.

As I said in the comments to the article, I think most reviews are missing the point that LG never marketed this as a quick snap/point and shoot camera. So by reviewing it based on what it wasn't mainly geared towards is doing it a disservice. The people the cameras were designed for (Or at least the impression I got from their marketing) are the ones that do want to take the extra time to manually set up the shot and create something that is their own, not simply accept whatever the auto mode thinks it should be.

Sure, auto mode could do with some tweaks for the masses, but I think reviewers should report based on what the camera is fully capable of to those that it's meant for.

I think that one aspect that all smartphone cameras should be judged on is quick point and shoot since that's how it is assumed most people will use it.

Gotta agree. For me, the camera is just one of any features of a phone. Most cameras are good enough for me including the V20's. I do think the S7e's is good but I'd not reach for the S7e instead of the V20 because of the camera but I respect that the camera is the paramount feature for many.

I haven't watched the second video yet, but the first was pretty good. Interesting that all the phones have weaknesses in their cameras.

I'm not thinking they were considering the G5 in the equation...seems like the V20 was just being minimized.

Even her manual mode photos are pretty bad. Ive seen a lot of great great manual mode photos with this camera, it tells me shes not a great photo taker.

Facts are facts; we see what we want to see. If the camera and or the phone works for you and you like it, what difference does it make if someone gives an opinion you don't agree with?

Exactly....I read reviews and then make my own call as to what works for me..... I have not one complaint about the performance of this phone.

Agreed, LG needs work
