Alright, I am new to Android, or soon to be. I was wondering a couple questions about the Samsung Captivate, hopefully someone will be able to answer them for me.

The first one is, are things such as Launcher Pro usable without rooting your device?

Another is, are you able to use custom ringtones for both the message and phone call ringtones?

Thank you to anyone that is able to help.

yes. launcher pro will give you a different UI but you will still have touchwiz running in the background. You can get launcher pro or any other home screen management app from the market.

You can set individual ringtones for each contact. As for messaging I know you can set a ringtone for the messaging app you are using. I don't think you can set an individual ringtone for each contact's incoming messages.

Alright, thanks a lot. I am going to pick my Captivate up in the morning and I have been looking at stuff on this phone and others for about a month now and I had just a couple more questions. Also, if apps like launcher pro are available without rooting your phone, what exactly is a third party application? I'm sorry, I'm pretty new to all of this android stuff.

'Third Party' means not from the device manufacturer or software vendor (ie. Samsung, ATT and Google), so anything you install yourself. There is the Android Market where you can get lots of free and cheap software, you'll be happy, it is easier than dealing with PC software actually. You don't need to root your phone unless you are a crazy power-user :)

Oh. Alrighty then. Thanks a lot.
