A few freezing and root questions

you guys are really making me rethink waiting for the official OTA and just use .893 so I can finally try out a new ROM... just got my go launcher the way I like it too...

A. You don't need to upgrade your system (.866 to X.893) to flash a ROM. The current crop of ROMs out there I think are all built off the latest 5.7.893 system base, so you get all the system tweaks that came with that just by flashing the ROM, just not the upgraded kernal and radio files.

B. Go Launcher (as most 3rd party launchers do) should have an option in its settings to backup your current configuration. Then after you wipe and flash a ROM you can simply restore the launcher config as you had it. That's what I use on Launcher Pro after every wipe.

I would want the radio and kernel updates though. I think I'm going to update and rom this weekend, I cant wait anymore.

I installed the leaked 5.7.893, and now I can't root. This is what I get:

I installed the leaked 5.7.893, and now I can't root. This is what I get:

Use the program to Restore back to stock, Root and ForeverRoot stock, then apply the full upgrade again from the top of the "Easy way to Upgrade to..." thread at rootzwiki. You cannot root 5.7.893 directly.

I noticed my backup for go launcher is stored in internal memory, which seems silly to me. Is it going to cause me problems to use root explorer to move the go launcher folders to sd-ext?

Can't help that much with the freezing question, take a look in \system\app using Root Explorer and you should see the .apk's that are listed there.

I haven't seen any con's to the custom ROM yet. The one I'm running is completely deblurred (i.e. no Moto Blur) and has your choice of 3rd party launcher replacements, including ICS Launcher. I believe it runs faster, it has a battery booster script built in, and a lot of the bloat is removed as part of the package. Downside would be that if a Moto OTA fix does eventually push, I wouldn't be able to install it (and actually you would need to unfreeze everything to install it on yours), but the ROM Devs usually get that stuff leaked earlier than the OTA, so an update would be pushed through the ROM. The ROM I'm on right now is built off of 5.7.893 so I didn't even bother to update to that first.

OK thanks. I may wait a bit and see if Motorola comes out with something. But if they keep dragging their feet I may just take the plunge and install thath ROM. Thanks for the tips.

I see a lot of chatter about the easy upgrade and leaked .893 alomg with flashing and rom updates. Are these all different? If I were t follow the steps in the easy upgrade thread and the forever root is that all i would need to do? and once this is installed and its forever rooted i assume that any warranty on the phone would be void because there would be no going back to stock or making it look as if it were not tampered with?? Correct?

Following the Easy Upgrade path gets you to system version 5.7.893 with updated kernal and radio files.

Flashing a ROM that is built off the 5.7.893 base will give you that system and all OS tweaks and fixes that accompany it, but won't change your kernal and radio files, as only the leaked updates can change those due to the phone having a locked bootloader.

Yes you will void your warranty for sure if you go Easy Upgrade path. After applying it, you can still restore your system to stock 5.5.866 if you need, but your kernal and radio files will be forever upgraded.
