A few Incredible / Android questions.

Hey everyone, I'm a few weeks into my Android experience with my Droid Incredible. I've spent a lot of time trying apps and customizing my phone and I've come up with some questions. I've researched some of them but a lot of my answers were from months ago and Android OS is maturing so fast I'd like an updated question. So here goes:

1. Root. Is there a reliable 2.3 Gingerbread root out yet? If not what about a fully working 2.2 with no problems.

2. Should Android System always be on top of my battery usage when using my phone? If I've only been using browser or a snes Rom it will still show the OS using more than anythig else, I assumed this was normal but read something that had me questioning it.

3. What are some absolute must have apps for the incredible? I want a users opinion because most websites aren't phone-specific with their "top 10 list"

4. What's a good battery life for this phone with heavy, moderate and light usage?

5. What gallery app should I replace the HTC gallery with. I've heard 3d gallery has problems on HTC incredible.

6. I'll think of more if Google fails me.

Yes. The latest UnrEvoked works with the latest Froyo for rooting. A few Gingerbread ROM's are starting to come out. As far as stable Froyo - CynogenMod is good - Virtuious is good - Myn's is good, try them all!

Mine usually has System at the top.

Depends on what you want to do - I think an obvious choice is Angry Birds, but other then that - what apps are best for you depend on what you are going to do with it!

4. What's a good battery life for this phone with heavy, moderate and light usage?

With the OEM - Even with being a Radio Facist - heavy to moderate usage will get you somewhere between 6 and 8 hours. The OEM battery is really not up to the task for this phone.

5. What gallery app should I replace the HTC gallery with. I've heard 3d gallery has problems on HTC incredible.

I've tried the Google 3d Gallery that is available in Virtuious, but I don't use it - it did not work all that great. Haven't really tried any others besides the HTC Gallery.

I'm not rooted, I love the phone as is. My system is always on top. Add joke here. Apps I use most are, poweramp, truly amazing! Beautiful widgets, tunee, soundhound, album art grabber, mp3 tagger pro, Google sky, imdb, poynt from my blackberry days, dolphin browser hd. And a few others. My number one app is poweramp. Hope this helps some.

Yes get the trial, then buy the paid version. Once you buy it don't delete the trial. What you buy is the key. It's well worth 5bucks. With all the features it has its worth more I think. I use my phone for my mp3 player and am very picky. I have a 16 gig card filled with music. Version 2.0 should be coming out soon, and I'm sure it will blow our minds. Make sure you look at the poweramp settings to get the most out of it. Some people complain about it lacking some features which it has if they understood the settings better. It will be the best 5 bucks you'll spend on any app..if music is your thing then poweramp is your best option.trust me..

Yes, download the trial first, then you can upgrade. I bought it and I think it's worth it, but you'll have to decide for yourself.

As for must-have apps, that is always a matter of taste. I need to have: Handcent SMS, Amazon MP3, Pandora, Google Listen, Barcode Scanner Tweetdeck. I also use Winamp for syncing.

I'm also rooted, so I use: ROM Manager, Titanium Backup, SetCPU & SystemPanel.

As for must have apps....I love Remote Notifier, it will display SMS/MMS/Phone/Battery messages on your PC over wifi or bluetooth. For someone who always has their phone on silent at the office this is a great tool to not miss anything.

Wow guys, thanks for the replies! I'll try some of the apps mentioned above later. I really love this phone and I think if I had any complaints it would be the battery life and the fact I can't remove bloatware without root (but that's the case with almost all phones).

Apps I use now after resetting my phone again last night are: Winamp, Gameboid, app installer, launcher pro plus (HTC sense had some toggle widgets I really like but I love LPP customization and dock). Fancy widget clock, Dolphin hd (huge mozilla fan for pc but their mobile version isn't as nice as dolphin IMO) and umm... I think that's all I installed last night.

For apps I love Check It Off - it's a really great free task list program, eBay, NoLED - puts flashing icons on your screen for missed calls, emails, texts, Google Talk messages and also plays a repeating sound reminder as well, Beautiful Widgets, Angry Birds, Bubble Burst (drives me crazy sometimes, but I love it), and Google Voice Search is a must so that you can use the voice actions to send texts and whatnot.
