A few questions concerning the original DROID...

okay...so. i have a few questions concerning the original droid. i recently came across one. it doesn't have service on it, but i can get wifi on it. it's through verizon. i'm not sure if the ESN is clean or not. but, anyway...

i'm wondering - is it possible to root this phone without having service on it? if so, what are the perks? i just started playing around with rooting phones a few days ago, and have successfully rooted 3 HTC EVO's and I AM IN LOVE. even if i'm not able to tether the phone, which i've read that verizon doesn't allow - is there any way to use it as a router? that may be a really stupid question, but i'm fairly new.

second question: the phone has a pattern lock on it, but i am still able to get to the home screen and access the phone itself. problem - there are pictures on the phone that i would like to delete, but i can't delete them from the gallery, and even when using ASTRO they aren't visible. how can i access/delete these files? is there any way to disable the screen lock? would doing a factory reset do any good?

this is getting lengthy, and i lost the rest of my questions, so...any replies are appreciated. [like i said - i'm new, so if these are totally ******ed questions, please don't be harsh. lol.]

Yes you can still root it with no service on it but rooting it will not enable you to get around a bad ESN or anything like that. Most features will still work over wifi except calling and texting.

Do a factor data reset. My droid has a dead battery right now so I cant access it but I believe this has to be done via the bootloader menu. That will erase all data on the phone (except the SD card, and there is an option to format/wipe that in the settings)

Pretty much the same as rooting any other device.

Tethering's pointless without service from the carrier.

If you can view them in the Gallery then they're visible. I suspect you just don't know where they're located. Try using Astro's search to find them.

I tried ASTRO and i still couldn't find them. i even searched through the files via PC. couldn't find them. i ended up doing a hard reset and cleared everything. the phone is working great now. and i found out that i just THOUGHT it had a bad ESN. it was actually clean. i am going to end up putting the phone on Boost Mobile's service. actually - a prepaid plan like PagePlus or something. not sure of the actual carrier yet. problem is, they can't put a data plan on it. WiFi will still work. if i root this phone, do you think i will still be able to tether and use the network for PC internet? it's worth a try, right? last question...if i end up bricking the phone - which i don't think will happen, but WORST CASE - there is a way to unbrick, right?

The phone has pattern lock enabled and your locked out, um sounds sketch, just saying.

I don't believe Boost will activate a VZW phone.

If you can't get a data connection on the phone, you cannot use it for wireless tether or USB tether.
