a little irritated by Google assistant launch time

...Or lack thereof!
Each time I try to launch Google assistant, I'm sitting there holding the home button, and watching the edges of the screen outline with the white color.. but the assistant never pops up. If it does on the off chance, then it's not even in listening mode, and I have to touch the microphone to prompt it to listen to me.
Does anyone know of a fix? Or is this normal?

This is happening to me too all the sudden. It used to work beautifully. Unfortunately, I don't have the answer
