A Question about upgrading to a Droid x.

Hi. I am new to the community and I have to say that it is wonderful and has helped me out a lot. Okay so my Verizon Wireless contract ends on August 17 2010. That is one month after the release of the Droid X. Now, I know that Verizon is offering a deal that if say my contract was up in November then I would be able to upgrade now. The thing is is that I am worried about them running out of stock of the Droid X's. So today I went to Best Buy to pre order a Droid X. They told me that they didn't think I could because my contract is up in August so I then went to Verizon and they told me that they didn't know anything about it and that they would have enough in stock. Can I pre order the Droid X even though my contract is up in August?

That is a Verizon deal. NOT, a Best Buy deal. You can't get that deal with the Best Buy pre-order, only through Verizon itself.

Actually this isn't entirely true. I'd suggest the OP contact's Verizon Customer Service and clear this up with them. Several people have claimed that they were able to get their local BB's to honor the early upgrade deal, but I'd say its YMMV.

Trust me though, if you speak to Verizon first they'll be more than happy to honor the early upgrade, as long as they get to keep you as a customer for another year or two.

Oh okay thank you. That stinks though because I have to come up with $300 instead of $200. Verizon should offer this deal and I'm going to be at the verizon store on July 15 as soon as they open.

Actually, if you buy online you will not have to pay the extra $100! Online they have instant rebates!!! They normally have free overnight shipping also!!

I went to BB this afternoon to run through this scenario exactly, except is my wife's upgrade that I will be using which makes it even more convoluted. Long story short, the location I ordered from (Scottsdale) is going to have a VZM rep onsite for exactly these types of issues. We will see, but that is what I was told.

I suggest you login to your MyVerizon account on the 15th and see what the upgrade price is online. If you order it online you will not have to deal with the rebate crap, and order it for $199.99. Plus, free shipping! I pre-ordered the X at BB, but all past upgrades I had (for the past 10 years with VZW) I've done online.

So by ordering on the 15th online, you will only have to pay $200 and you get free shipping? Is that overnight shipping?

Also, does anyone know how the NE2 discount thing works? I've read that if I signed up before February of '09 (which I did), and kept a bill over $50 a month and didn't change anything, I will get a $100 credit towards my upgrade. So does that mean my Droid X will only cost me $100?

1st Question - Yes (well more than likely). I'm pretty sure everytime I've ordered a device online, VZW has deducted all "rebates" instantly and provided me with overnight shipping for free

2nd Question - Yes, assuming you meet the criteria you should be eligible for a $100 credit (like me ;) )

Ah, that's good news. I was completely unaware of that offer up until a few days ago. Looks like I can justify buying the accessories when I get the phone now.

My local BB had no clue about the pre-order and I too am eligible for my NE2 next month. My concern is that the kid had no idea about the pre-order until I told him and other than filling out that one page flyer and getting a gift card he never looked up my VW account. Now I am wondering if I should be concerned, it would really stink to be the first person at my local BB to pre-order and then not get the phone on the release date.

Any suggestions?

Same here. Plus if you've been a good little VZW customer (I think you have to be a VIP or have Employee Discounts on your account) you'll be able to knock off 25% on all and any accessories.

Makes it a little bit easier to swallow the car-dock...

If you're worried that BB won't honor your NE2, call up VZW and ask them to iron out the details. Let them know about your preorder and what store you placed it at, and they should be able to iron out all the details before the launch.

Thanks for your suggestion!!

I just contacted VW and they told me I should wait the couple of extra weeks (August 8th) and save myself $100 so I can get my NE2. I was hoping they would let me upgrade a few weeks early with the NE2 but no dice - but then again I didn't push it, so you never know. As much as I want to get rid of my POS Storm1 the VW rep was right and I am going to hold off till August 8th to order online through VZW.

She also said they don't foresee any production issues from Motorola so no worries about going online and ordering after launch date.

Too bad because I was the first person to pre-order at my local Best Buy, I will just use the $50 gift card toward accessories for the droid x. I thought waiting until July 15 would be hard now I will be waiting until August 8th and deal with battery pulls, duplicate texts and freezing - argh but $100 bucks is a $100 bucks!

Sorry if this is already in another thread, but when do phones usually go on sale online? Is it midnight on release day or what?

As of right now I'm just awaiting more info from Verizon on this unless someone has a more definite answer.

I would assume sometime early morning on the 15th (12am - 3am). You could set your alarm clock early that morning and order it.

Yeah I plan on checking after midnight so I can get the ball rolling and have it on the 16th since most of the time they do overnight shipping!!!

I emailed Verizon on the 17th and simply asked if I was able to move my NE2 date (08/26/10) up so I could order the Droid X. The next day I had someone call me and tell me they looked into my email and moved my date up to that day.

It was extremely easy to have my date pushed up by more than a month, so I would suggest trying the same thing since your date is in less than a month.

I would avoid Best Buy if possible. They don't know what they are talking about. Told me they were getting 40 to 50 shipments the 1st day and I was number 16. That day they received 12 and told me that the next shipments would not come for several weeks. Not to mention they are rude and uninformed. You would probably have a better chance at one of those smaller Verizon authorized zoom stores. Or do what I did, get it from BJ's warehouse or Costco if you belong. You will have to shell out the extra 100 bucks but to me that was worth the lack of stress that Best Buy gave me. I called them several times to to avail. They didn't want to answer the phone, hung up on me too. I wouldn't do business with them again.
