A random thought: I like DEX, a lot.

I've started using the DEX function on my Note 9, plugging it into my work monitor, which is large and has high res. Bouncing between work projects on my Mac, and the desktop-like funtion of DEX, has added a new layer of funcitionality to phone - something I like very well.

Absolutely, it really takes some time to actually use it to really appreciate it's capabilities.

I want to use dex but i find I can never get it to work. It needs conditions more perfect than those to begin life to kick in! There always seems to be a reason for it not to work so I've given up trying.

Huawei have a similar thing...will try out theirs in future to see if it is less demanding to run.

What is not working for you? Are you using a DeX dock? If not, I'd highly recommend it. I've been using it since the S8+ & Note8 with no issues.

I don't use the dock, I have a USB-Type C and a HDMI cable, to connect to my monitor. So far, its been flawless in connectivity.

I feel like DEX is more Mac like, in its user interface, than Windows-like. Although I do prefer Windows for desktop than Mac.

Does anyone use a bluetooth keyboard with Dex? I do and some of the keys are different and I cannot figure out why. Instead of a comma, Dex puts in a backslash. It happens on many of the keys...anyone have any idea why?

I want to like Dex but for me it's more of a novelty as I always have my Surface Pro so I would really be pressed or I would need to become very confident before going on a business trip without my SP.

Don't get me wrong as that would sure be nice just carrying 1 piece of luggage and my phone in my pocket. But you still need the accessories to hook up to either a monitor or projector, mouse, and keyboard.

I do, I have both the dock and a usb wire...neither works sadly. At work we have monitors that take digital input but it is a slightly different connection than hdmi. I have a hdmi wire to that connection as it's a common connection...dex doesn't work on it. I'm struggling to find monitors that do hdmi! And on TVs the dex is always grainy and distorted.

It's simply too fussy...it should be simple, plug it into a digital screen and it starts....it's far from that.

It is actually that simple. USB-C to HDMI on a regular monitor, and you're up and running.

It's not that simple at all. There should be flexibility, especially if it's meant to plug into monitors as a pc replacement! I'm yet to come across a monitor with hdmi on it and having just kitted out a building I've seen a lot of them. I'm not saying they don't exist, however if this is to be a convenient solution then it should work with digital input not just one specific port.

Another thing to note - every single time I've ever plugged it into a standard TV the display has been grainy and the icons are off screen as if the screen is cropped. So it doesn't work well on TVs, it won't work on monitors...from my experience I am sure you can understand why I am saying that this is far, far from ready for daily use.

I will be trying the hauwei one at some point hoping they have more flexibility in theirs. I've given up with Dex sadly.

It is that simple. If you've not come across a monitor with an HDMI input then you're looking at the wrong monitors. You're probably looking at monitors with DVI inputs, which are far more rare than HDMI but do exist in a lot of corporate environments. I have an $89 Samsung monitor with HDMI that works like a champ and I've successfully used it on a pile of other monitors as well....including at work. Don't really care about TV, as I've never looked into trying to use any TV as any sort of monitor.

If you're going to make a judgement call on the utility of DeX, then try it as it was intended before leaping to incorrect conclusions.

It's not an 'incorrect conclusion'! I am literally sharing my experience of trying to use dex! That's not a conclusion it is experience. It's great you have managed to get it working and that it is helpful for you. Sadly, my experience is the opposite and I can't see why I should have to ask my organisation to purchase another monitor to get it working. There should be more versitility in Dex in my view.

Used it with note 8 /Dock. Now use it with note 9 and just the cable. What a brilliant bit of kit. Certainly improved from the note 8.

Just plug and play.

( I travel around a lot and not found a monitor for some time that did not have hdmi)

Can you tell us what kind of connectors or displays you are dealing with? Assuming the display is new enough to use digital connections, I would expect dvi, HDMI, displayport, or some combination of the three. And the only issues that I think would pop up with being able to use adapters or cables that concert from one to the other would be resolution incompatibilities and if hdcp is required for any content (IIRC, early dvi inputs existed before the hdcp handshake started to be used, possibly some early HDMI as well).

If you don't follow the directions for the phone, don't expect the performance to be just what you want. Your conclusion that DeX has no utility is the incorrect one to which I was referring. DeX works just fine, as evidenced not just by my experience but the experience of many others on this thread.

You're doing it wrong. If you want to code it for a different monitor/input than was intended, feel free to write an app that adapts the two. Good luck though, it's a lot easier to find a monitor with an HDMI input. And nobody said anything about you trying to get your work to buy you a different monitor. That's all coming from you.

Look, it's great that you are having a positive experience with Dex, brilliant. That's your experience, mines is sadly the opposite, which I have shared with both hdmi and frustratingly with other common digital input.

I'm not going to get drawn into any further conversation with you about dex, frankly I will use my energies elsewhere. You like it and it works great! I like it and wish it worked, not so great. Enjoy the phone.

I havent tried Dex at all, not even once. But I would like to try it one day.

Not really sure how it works but I dont think I have a use for it since I use my laptop all day?
