A random thought: I like DEX, a lot.

I havent tried Dex at all, not even once. But I would like to try it one day.

Not really sure how it works but I dont think I have a use for it since I use my laptop all day?

It essentially takes the phone's OS and turns it into a Windows like interface. You have windows, the taskbar, and a mouse which makes navigating your phone environment like using a Mac or Windows PC.

It obviously lacks software written for Mac/PC, but if you find yourself without your laptop and you need to work with a spreadsheet or other generic type of document that is too cumbersome to do on your phone/tablet, DEX is a great stand in.

It is that simple. If you've not come across a monitor with an HDMI input then you're looking at the wrong monitors. You're probably looking at monitors with DVI inputs, which are far more rare than HDMI but do exist in a lot of corporate environments. I have an $89 Samsung monitor with HDMI that works like a champ and I've successfully used it on a pile of other monitors as well....including at work. Don't really care about TV, as I've never looked into trying to use any TV as any sort of monitor.

If you're going to make a judgement call on the utility of DeX, then try it as it was intended before leaping to incorrect conclusions.
Not debating the usefulness of DEX, but I rarely see monitors with HDMI ports in a large scale office layout. It's not that they're cheap or old, it's just that an HDMI capable monitor adds unnecessary cost in such an environment that may have hundreds of monitors running office software at 1280x1024. Some have them some don't, but not having them is certainly more common in my experience.

I see.. thanks for your help!

Loving DeX! Typing from it right now.....BT keyboard, BT mouse, and a USB-C to HDMI cable to a 24" monitor. Working like a champ, doing some spreadsheets and word processing....basically a Chromebook replacement!

Just for kicks I'm now using DeX on a 4k TV via HDMI port. Working like a champ at 55" Woot.

If you're hauling around a laptop, there's no need for DeX. I'm using it as more of a novelty than anything.

Hi, this is my first post. I hope I'm on the right thread.

I am a Samsung fan and my current mobile setup is formed of an S7 edge phone and a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 tablet. Both pretty old, I know. Their performance is not as it use to be, but I can still use them. I consider buying a Note 9 to replace the S7e. Maybe, if I am patient enough, a Note 10. The problem is that I got so used with the tablet that I feel the need to change that with a new one, as well.
The point is that I would avoid spending money on two new expensive and somehow redundant devices and I would also like to avoid continuing to maintain two android devices.
So, I started from the idea presented here

on Note9 in Dex mode +portable touchscreen monitor, were you will get sort of a tablet. It is not exactly the neat setup because:
• if you want to be mobile 100% you need to carry around a portable charger for powering up the monitor. Adding up the power cables complicates the setup.
• Then there is the issue of resolution. A decent portable tablet has between 9.x to max 12.x inches, but at this size, most portable touchscreen monitors are full HD, rarely above.
Then it struck me!
Why should I spend money on the new monitor and external battery when I can use my old Note Pro instead. It has touchscreen, better resolution than Full HD and battery included. If I manage to connect it with Note9 in Dex mode, I could use the processing power of the phone and the display of the tablet. If I could connect them wirelessly, that would be awesome! It would be like a heart transplant to my tablet.

Do you think that will work?
Thanks!

If Dex could run the Microsoft version of Office I would use it but even Chrome books run the crappy Android version. I use Excel a lot so Dex is pretty useless to me. I need all the Excel features for work.

Does anybody use Citrix Workspace (VDI) on Dex? Is iT recommended for daily use?

I use all of my corporate apps on VDI. Except for my server I use putty, but I can use Termius if it’s supported on Dex.
