The Pixel 9 Pro XL looks bretty solid and JerryRigEverything found that it showed the same scratch test levels (6/7) as the test for the Pixel 8 Pro. While I was initially using a screen protector (which I hated) on my P8P, because of an (in hindsight) illogical fear of scratches, I stopped using it after receiving some pretty good input/feedback from members of the AC Forum. I do continue to use a Spigen case, but haven't used a screen protector on my P8P for 6 months and haven't received a single scratch (micro or otherwise) using just a modicum of care in its handling - good case, never in the same pocket as keys or other hard, solid objects and never tossed around like a frisbee.
So, do you really need to use a screen protector on your Pixel 9 Pro XL? I would say "probably not" if your main concern is scratching and you tend to use some care when handling your investment.
