A ton of data today, Anyone else Notice it?

No one here is running a custom ROM with an overclocking kernel are they? I know that's a stupid question but I guess it could be overlooked.
I have had this happen to me as well but quickly found it was my OC that I didn't have set right. I was going from 100% to dead in like eight hours lol.

this sounds like a case of coincidence i've seen many reports on many random days of batteries mysteriously dropping to 0%. I do not think verizon/motorola pushes silent updates.

actually downloading the data needed for the update could drain a battery very easily

this really isn't true. I've downloaded full on custom ROMS (each whose size was way larger than an OTA update from verizon) and the download never drained my battery. If your phone is constantly downloading files or a process is stuck, repeatedly doing something, then yes that could drain the battery.

To be fair, Verizon has done stuff in the background before. I had an HTC 6800 with them a few years back and they silently disabled agps one day forcing customers to buy their navigation service or be without it. Someone eventually found a workaround again but they did this with no announcement and no official update. It just kind of turned off one day.

Good point. however, I don't think they'd quietly release something as major as an OS update. They may "slip" in something that is viewed as negative. But, there is no benefit in being quiet about an OS update.

Verizon isn't evil. They aren't stupid either. They'll quietlly and sneakily take something away. But, they will milk an update for all it's worth.

I never said it was a secret either, all I was alluding to is that our phones could be doing packet acquisition as we speak, it falls within the time lines.

Bottom line is; When your phone uses a ton of data your battery is going to be put through its paces. By making your battery really work, its going to heat up; sub-atomic particles are silly like that.





So BOTTOM LINE is; I am not bible thumping about 2.1 and heeing and hawing about it. The entire point of the post was asking if anyone else has been noticing the same things as I have.

Things I've learned; mentioning 2.1 brings out the trolls, both good and bad.

I used the word "secret" incorrectly. You obviously have more experience receiving OS updates on Android then me. I apologize for doubting you.

This is good news.... That means we DON'T need to hear a bunch of fanfare and hoopla... we just wake up one morning and BAM! there it is. Sweet, thanks for explaining.

PS: How does one know when there is a bunch of data being used? the battery drains? One other response here was that massive data transfers DON'T drain batteries. Also, if it happens at night while plugged, wouldn't it just recharge? SO, even IF it drains the battery I wouldn't know. So, how do I know when I'm getting some sort of carrier pushed upgrade / downgrade data transmission?

I downloaded the entire Sholes 2.0.1 Bitchin Baegel release on my way to school. Didn't do squat to my battery. I guarantee you that the OTA updates aren't that large by any means.

Because I can see my 3G icon's little arrows having a panic attack yet none of my programs are using it.

But whatever, I wont argue with anyone, because this wasn't a fight about 2.1, yet everyone seems to want it to be one.

I just asked if anyone else's batteries where dying and data was moving when it normally wouldn't.

I had a similar incident as well, although mine happened after I downloaded the new google maps. My droid went from 80% down to the teens in less than 4 hours, but when I plugged it in, it went almost immediately back up to the original 80% charge??? No other problems since.
