A2.1 apps still stored on internal storage?

Apologies if this has been posted, but did a search and I don't have an Android phone yet.

I heard early OS versions store the apps on internal storage and not on card. Is this still the case with 2.1? Will be an issue to get long play 3D apps if stored locally. How is that being handled?

I'm talking about official support, not hacks or 3rd party solutions.

Am on a Pre now but the Evo sure looks appealing if I could get by with a virtual keyboard.

No A2SD yet, Google says they are working on it, till then there are games that do store some data on the SD card

There's no need for hacks or 3rd party solutions if the developer knows what they're doing. The space-hogging resources can already be stored on the SD card. However, there's no way to store binaries (which are small) on the SD card at the moment.
