AA Google maps no night mode

I am using a Galaxy s10+. I have Google maps set to switch to night mode on my phone and it works fine. However, when connected to Android auto, I never get night mode. There is no option in the AA interface on the car screen. The white version of navigation is way too bright for night driving. Is there something I am missing about activating night mode?

When I turn my headlights on, AA (including Google Maps) goes into dark mode on my head unit.

Yep, on all the cars I drove, it is always automatic. Nothing to configure. It is the job of Android Auto headunit to do this switch.

Depending on your car's head unit, there may be a setting in your car's unit for a dark theme, but it is usually automatic (triggered by turning on the headlights). My head unit is an aftermarket Pioneer. It has some theme settings, but the AA part doesn't require any adjustments for dark/night mode. It's automatic when I turn on my lights.

Your's doesn't automatically switch?

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner. My phone won't let me post a response for some reason.

Thanks for the responses. I have a 2018 Chevy Colorado with a factory head unit. There is nothing in settings there that helps. I can set night mode on AA on my phone, but it doesn't make it happen when connected to the car. Nothing changes when my lights are on or off. I did find a workaround, which was to use the Samsung system-wide Night Mode, which puts everything in night mode. I don't mind that at all except it meant that I had to uninstall custom themes and use the default Samsung theme. I guess I would rather do that and be able to have a night mode for google maps while in AA. It is blinding having a bright white screen shining in your face at night.

Very strange. Have you ever gotten your head unit to go into dark mode in AA using a different phone? I'm using a Note 10+ which has basically the same OS as an S10+, and it works perfectly. Prior to my Note 10+, I used a Pixel 2XL. No issues with it either.

So I'm thinking this issue has more to do with the head unit than the phone. Have you checked to see if there are any firmware updates for your head unit? My Pioneer unit can accept firmware updates via SD card. My unit is an aftermarket unit that I installed myself into my 2006 Dodge Charger.

Some mobile apps toggle between day/night using the ambient light sensor, and others use the Night Mode as the trigger event. Is your Samsung phone display configured to automatically switch to Night Mode (under display settings)? AA (and Waze in particular) won't automatically switch to night mode unless the phone itself goes to night mode (presumably because AA is using the Samsung night mode as the trigger event). But maybe I misunderstood your problem.

If the head unit is doing what it is supposed to do, it shouldn't matter what mode the phone is in (day or night mode). The head unit is supposed to take its queue for light or dark mode from your car's headlights being on or off. Not from whether your phone is in light or dark mode. If it's failing to do that, it won't matter what phone you connect to it. Check for a firmware update for your head unit.
