Is sending it back to Moto my best option for getting it fixed? Anyone with experience getting theirs fixed locally in the NYC or DC areas?

I would send it back to Moto if you can. A lot of repair shops don't use good glass when they repair it. They put some cheap stuff on there and it never works like it did. With Moto they will put what came on there.

I would always recommend sending it back to the manufacturer. They will replace it correctly and warranty their work.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to send it back to Moto. Local places were even more expensive, and don't have the screen in stock anyway. $100 isn't bad - still cheaper than if I had had insurance the whole time.

Good luck and I hope you don't run into the issues I had. The second time (this past month) was much better. If you do the advance replacement, send back that phone ASAP!

Also, they may not have the moto x model you have. I got a Nexus 6 because they did not have any XT1053 Developer Edition.
