Abominable keyboard lag/SMS issue -- help appreciated!

Hi friends,

I'm writing you today with an issue I've struggled to resolve after hours and hours of forum searches! My keyboard lag is just disheartening. It happens the most when using the stock Messaging app (Verizon), and often involves 60-90 seconds of freeze-time while the phone tries to figure itself out. Sometimes I'll tap the blank space in Messaging, and no keyboard will pop up. It'll take 30 seconds to load an SMS conversation. I'm currently on Google Keyboard and I've tried clearing the cache. I've tried other SMS apps, but nothing seemed to work. I was hoping Lollipop would take care of it, but no such luck. It seems to only happen while texting, and the issue is exacerbated when I receive a text message while replying to another.

Additionally, as of this week, Google Keyboard has stopped listening to my preference for disabled autocorrect, and it's been autocorrecting frivolously.

Does it happen with a specific Keyboard or does it go away if you switch to another one like SwiftKey or Swype?

Thanks for your reply! The problem with my autocorrect happened to be that my default keyboard must've reset to LG and I didn't notice. One issue down! After checking, I still have the lag though, regardless of whether it's Swype or standard. The lag is most pronounced when receiving a text while drafting a reply.

Have you tried a different messaging app, like Hangouts?
