About that finger scanner

I finally have the chance to try both the S9 and S9+ in a store that doesn't have a huge anti-tamper device sticking out the back.

First thing I tried was the finger scanner.

It seems the majority agree that the new placement is much more logically thought out and better especially for those with smaller fingers.

I might be in the minority, however, because it was challenging to feel out where it is without smudging the camera lens cover. Maybe it's because I'm used to the placement on the Note8 because the way I hold my phone coupled with my really long index finger meant that the scanner actually sits close to where my index finger rests on.

The S9 (especially the S9+) probably requires some retraining for me in order to use the sensor without smudging the camera glass cover.

This isn't me whining or complaining. I just feel like contributing a different side to the topic.

Just like the S8, once you put a case on, you'll get used to it pretty quick

It's better but still not great imo. Too small and too close to the camera

While I am happy with the placement, my concern is if the scanner is made of cheap plastic like in the S8, or will they use a better material. I also wonder how accurate and fast would it be. I hated the past fingerprint scanner from the galaxy phones as they look cheaply built, is slow and not accurate.

It may be made of plastic. But if your familiar wit h JerryRigEveryrhing on YouTube he does a durability test. Even after severely scratched with a razor it still works perfectly fine.

It's not really not being able to feel it out too.

Once I know where it is, it's a little awkward. It feels pretty low for my really long index finger.

Which is ironic as the predecessors had an FPS that was too high for smaller hands.

A case or skin would definitely improve it.

Question about using the finger scanner. If you have the fingerprint set as your unlock option, what happens if for some reason the fingerprint scanner fails to recognize your fingerprint or doesn't work? Is there another way you can unlock your phone as a backup?

A PIN is required when setting up the scanner.

If fingerprint authentication fails or when the device is rebooted or idle for a very long time, the PIN will be asked

I agree with you. The placement is, once again, in a terrible position. I don't understand why Samsung left it connected to the camera again. That's so stupid. I did the same thing when I played around the S9+ last weekend--I kept touching the camera whenever I tried reaching for the FPS. And I don't understand why Samsung didn't turn the FPS 90 degrees. Ugh. They've been making some pretty terrible design choices the last couple of years.

It really depends on how you hold it and how long your fingers are.

I have huge hands and hold my phone in a specific manner. The scanner itself has definitely improved, but that placement will take some practice to nail it without smudging the camera.

Granted, it is the secondary camera, but still
