About the new fingerprint API

I understand Google basically implemented the same system that Apple has with TouchID. But why doesn't Google have a name for it so that people know what to look for was well as devs? This is typical Google, dropping the ball on letting people know about their cool features.
 
It's been one of the most talked about additions to 6.0 going back to May. They spent a fair amount of time talking about it at both I/O as well as the Marshmallow rollout.
