Now for something pet different.
Very long story short I've sort of adopted 5 neighborhood outdoor abandoned cats. I've been feeding them since this summer.
The picture is of the cat trails leading to our deck where they come to eat. What is fascinating to me is that there are only two trails. One cat blazed the trail and the other cats use it. I have a security camera at the deck and I can see which ones are there and at what times. All of them make the trip at different times.

That’s really cool. I’ve lost track and getting old. Where is this ??

In Missouri, our backyard. I took this right before one of the cats showed up to dine. His name I know...Benny. I'll get a better picture of him. The attachment is a still from my security camera of Benny.
There is a black cat who would run away when she saw me. After months of patience and talking to her from a distance she will come up to me and allow me to pet her (or him). She is still a bit tentative about it though.

That's really awesome... For the record, I'm a dog person, I tolerate cats, but domestic animals in the wild do need help and I truly respect the delicate balance of helping them while not making the problems worse.

Kudos to you and the camera. It helps show a unique perspective absent human intrusion.

Before I was introduced to the fascinating world of feline companionship I was strictly a dog person. I had two Aussies, one, Smoke, was as close to a soulmate as any human or animal as ever come. He was my agility champion. See below.
It was my marriage to my wife who wanted a cat that I agreed since she love Smoke and Diamond and I knew I couldn't say no. So we adopted our first cat, then a cute fluffy kitten, that soon won my heart. In the following 11 years we ended up adopting a total of 5 cats, never more than 3 at a time. Now with Panny (first cat) there is Slate and Lil Bess (who is one cute chatterbox). Since working from home for the last 4 years I've had the opportunity to interact with them 24 hours a day and find them absolutely fascinating.
So it is true, an old dog can learn new tricks.
10 years ago Smoke and Diamond waved goodbye as they crossed the Bridge leaving a major hole in my heart. Our cats do a masterful job in maybe not filling that hole but making a new home in my life.
Btw a new track showed up last night. It's on the far right. See below.

That unfortunately is the sad fact of animal companionship. There will come a time where goodbyes are inevitable. I had Smoke for 17 wonderful years and Diamond for 15.
I miss both very much but I have years of wonderful and incredible memories. I wouldn't give that up.

I had Billy for just under 15 years so I know what you mean.

Below sitting on the left deck railing is the black cat that I spent months trying to gain her (him?) trust. Finally she came up to me meowing all the way and let pet her. We call her "Outdoor Panny" after our indoor cat Panny (Pandora). She even let me pick her up once to put her on the table.

You are right. Tbat is the one sad thing about caring for animal relatives. Although I want to be there with my cat when she passes, when that day comes - I want her to know that I'll always be there for her. It's definitely something that will hurt but I'm so happy she's been in my life and me in hers.

My cat falling asleep on her T-Rex Christmas present that she practically mauled to death on Sunday morning. 🤍20210221_114215_01.jpg
