Am I able to access the app market through Wifi on my Eris without having the phone activated? If so how?

I bought the phone from a friend and will change over to main phone in a couple of days.

Turn on airplane mode>>>wait a few seconds>>>turn on wireless>>>select your Wi-Fi router>>>enter needed security passwords.

there is an icon on the screen. or swipe screen to see where your friend has moved it too.
