according to CNN, Google to acquire Motorola Mobility

You are so wrong. You know patents can be bought and sold alone right? Do you really think they bought a manufacturing sect and make a OS that can be implemented, but have no plans or desires too? They just wanted the patents? No sir, I disagree to the very core of your statement. I do think the deep patents were a driving force though.

And I'm a firm believer that while making their own devices might benefit Google, they were not looking for an OEM. In the disgusting patent world, they saw a struggling Motorola with a treasure chest of patents, and said "let's do it". In the short term, it benefits Android. Should later on Google decide they want to make their own line of phones directly, they CAN.

Google does this all the time, buy a company, and maybe down the road they figure out a use for them. Only in this case they gain both long term and short term benefits. My bet is that Google will be the absent parent company, Moto will operate as they are now (maybe even Blur intact), but should Google want something down the road, they can have it.

Also explains the canned responses from HTC, LG, and Samsung. Google explained, we aren't your competition guys, just doing this to protect you.

Potentially, the best cellular industry deal I've read about in awhile. The only shadow I could see would be Google deciding to make Motorola the sole provider of future Nexus devices.

huge win/win!!! Google's business model/strategy + Moto's hardware = all win!

let's all give Sanjay Jha a big round of applause for bumbling his way along, and making Moto vulnerable for acquisition. ...and then give him a big wave good-bye, and don't let the door hit him in the arse on his way out!!!

+1
This is exactly right. The #1 reason for this was Motorola's patents. Yes, patents can be sold but why buy a bag of apples when you can have the whole orchard. Motorola Mobility will stay the same. Now it's Google...parent company of Motorola Mobility. This does make it easy if they wish to sell Smartphones under the Google name. I personal don't see this happening any time soon if at all.

Exactly, also important are moto's current pending patents. Now google has all of them, plus a possible manufacturing arm for years down the road. Just cost only a couple billion extra. Must be nice...

Exactly what I was thinking. Google's first order of business is to fire this "Bozo the Clown" (Sanjay Jha).

i'm going to have to disagree here. Sanjay was smart enough to go "all in" on Android when Android was in its infancy and looked far from a "sure thing" to anybody. the original Motorola Droid 1 lead the charge of the Android juggernaut and helped put Android where it is today. Sanjay deserves some credit for what he has done. remember that when he took over Motorola, it was listless and in bad shape and worth a lot less than $12.5B. give some credit where credit is due.

Yep, his job is to add value to shareholders. I would say a 60% increase in share price while he is at the helm qualifies!

Here is a big question. Since this is happening does it mean Motorola phones like the Atrix will get updates in a much more reasonable time span. Instead of saying waiting 6+ after Gingerbread's release before we got it we would get Icecream say with in 2 monthish.

Hopefully Google realizes that Android's success is because of it's wide field of manufacturers. When I read the partner responses earlier, you could almost see the gleeful smile behind the responses. You don't think Sony, Samsung, LG and all the rest would have liked to get into the iPhone business??? Apple's exclusion of all other hardware manufacturers in the iPhone's popularity now sounds like it's going to be their biggest weakness because it really has now turned into everyone vs. Apple. Had Apple allowed Sony to create their own branded iPhone (whiile still maintaining very strict hardware specs), they may never have even gotten into Android business. Same with Samsung, same with Motorola. But they weren't allowed to play in the iPhone sandbox and went over to Android's instead, so I believe they truly are happy about that sandbox being stronger and more protected than ever.

Many tech blogs think that if Google shows preferential treatment or starts releasing their own phones, oem's will flock to Windows Phone 7. I personally took the manufacturers responses this morning as "this is what google told us to say". Google must tread carefully, and work hard to keep ALL their partners happy.

A united android is unbeatable. But if Google somehow makes even one of them consider leaving the platform, it will not be good. I'd like to think that google has already discussed this with each of them, and they all have google's word their won't be any "Googorola" competition against them.

Exactly.

If Google starts to become more insular and locks out their partners, they'll basically be repeating what Apple did (which has been successful but is unsustainable). Yes, a united Android is unbeatable and with any luck Google realizes that Android is Droid, EVO, Nexus, Thunderbolt, Thrive, Xperia Play, Transformer, Incredible, and so on. There is far more Android hardware out there that is not Motorola than is and I think Google is fully aware of that and won't rock that boat. I also don't think Sony, LG, Samsung, etc mind in the least if Apple has to eat a little s#!t in the process.

Droid is a Verizon thing not a Motorola thing. HTC and Samsung also makes droids.

I think patents had something to do with this, but what I really believe is that Google needed to something about fragmentation. I think Google was tired of thier software updates taking 4, 5 and 6 months to make it to the end user because the OEM's had to tweek it to be compatiable with thier propietary skins. This gives Google established distribution channels on the hardware side along with a terrific mfg'ing ability. What should happen is that Google phones will be released on more carriers carrying the stock Google OS. Software updates will come in a timely manner to more people and the other competing OEM's will need to compete on this new model. I see this as a win for the Android user base.
