We bought a used, clean ESN Incredible we are going to activate with Verizon on a grand fathered plan. We will keep this phone active until the Nexus comes out and then replace it with the Nexus.

It has FW version 2.1 (1) on it.

What I am wondering is in what order should I update the phone? Activate, update and then root or ??

Will the latest update be the only update that is received or do we have to do all the updates (OTA) in order they were released?

Thanks for the help! Just wanting to make sure I do this in the correct order so there are no problems!

I don't think you'll be able to do OTAs. When you receive an OTA, it first checks to make sure you have the correct previous version of s/w, and in this case, you don't, because you're skipping Froyo entirely. Now it might work, might not. IMO, it's much easier to just save yourself the time spent to download the OTAs and just manually install the zip file. From what I've read, I'm not sure if there's a good root for GB yet, but Froyo is a piece of cake with unrEVOked. So I would update.zip to Froyo and then root.

Thanks for the help..I do appreciate it.

As I figured, I have screwed this simple process up. Phone will now only boot to white boot screen or into CW. When applying the update.zip file, it fails and says "bad file"

I tried to dl the file again..same thing. Im guessing I bricked this bad boy!

What is the best resolution now? Can I take it back by loading a stock img or am I SOL?

I know I should give up before I trash this phone but, maybe my ignorance will pay off!

Anyway, somehow, some way, I was able to upgrade the phone to 2.3.4/4.08.605.2 and it is working.

However, I now cannot root the phone. I tried using the unrevoked deal and it says it failed "is your firmware too new"

Also, I tried to boot back into recovery and it SEEMS there is no recovery option available now. When I power off, there are now 3 options..before there were 5 I believe.

When I hold vol down and turn on power...phone boots up...boots up very fast!

What am I missing here?

I've seen unrevoked work with GB and I've also seen people get the "new firmware" message so I'm not sure what's going on there..

As for booting into recovery, the process hasn't changed - make sure you're holding down the volume down key until you're actually in
