Activation Fees

I decided to turn on my 3g service on my xoom for a bit. I noticed however that I wasn't changed an activation fee or told that I would get charged one. Did Verizon waive this now or did I just luck out and got a nice rep?

I know that many reps will waive the *initial* activation fee on the Xoom--a Verizon store employee I talked to was happy to do this for me if I purchased one. That great if you always plan to keep your data plan active.

The hitch is that if you stop and then restart data -- then currently Verizon will charge an activation fee for *each* reactivation. Unless they've changed that very recently. It wouldn't surprise me if they did--since most people have home wifi networks and do not require year round data plan charges.

It would be great if they've changed that!

You can actually suspend your service without having to pay another activation fee from the verizon web site too.

Yeah, but suspending service costs $15 no? Also I believe there is a limit on how many times you can suspend service in a year. Seems like an awfully complicated way to manage your data plan when you can simply stop and start service easily right on an iPad--without incurring activation fees. I hope this changes on the Xoom, I'm waiting on the sidelines for now. Can't buy under the current data plan system.

Just FYI, I was charged the activation fee, will be calling today to cancel the 3g and getting the activation fee rebated.

The hitch with that though is that you can only suspend once a year and the suspension can only be for 6 months which sucks. I asked about this route as well when I called before I bought the Xoom.

Just called verizon, canceled the g3, not needed since I have a rooted Droid Pro to tether it to, got them to credit back the $35.00 activation fee, no problems, no issues.

*~Activation Fee Waived!!~*

ok guys, if you're like me and got your Xoom first day you knew you had to pay an activation fee if you went with a data plan from Verizon. i'm sure i wasn't the only one a bit upset by that but i wanted to use it everywhere (which i have :) ) so i sucked it up (got it full retail at Best Buy too so i had to activate to use wifi)...then today i read about how Verizon is waiving the activation fees for Xoom's thanks to the iphad2 not requiring an activation fee. made me a bit angry so i called customer service and asked them what the deal was. Good news is they waived my activation fee with me simply asking them to do so!! No hassle whatsoever so if any of my fellow 1st day guys out there, or anyone for that matter, got the data plan through Verizon i'd give them a call and get your activation fee waived!!

i really hope this helps some others out!! sorry for the long winded version :P

I stopped into a Verizon company store after work and confirmed that they'd waive the initial activation fee. I also confirmed that if you subsequently stop and restart a data plan, you will be charged an activation fee for each reactivation--and that those will not be waived.

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but I just got my bill and got hit with an activation fee ill be calling in today about it though to see if it can get waived.

So I work for Verizon Customer Service (I know that might make me "the enemy" in a lot of people's books) and I thought I'd try and explain the activation vs suspension issue.
First off, if you want to see if you got charged an activation fee, the best way to check is on myverizon. log in, click on View Bill. the activation fee will be listed under 'Charges by Line' for your new device. to see if you were credited for it, meaning it got waived in store or by customer service, it would be under 'Billing Summary' in the "Verizon Wireless' Surcharges and Other Charges & Credits" portion. On a paper bill, the activation charge would still be under the new line and the credit would be on page 2 under 'Other Charges and Credits'. Activations are usually waived as promotions or as part of an employee discount.
As far as suspension goes, if you suspend a line(phone or data) online or in the automated phone system, theres no $15 charge. if you call and have a rep do it or go into a store and have the rep do it, you will get charged (unless its a lost/stolen suspension, which are waived). You can have your line suspended with or without billing in blocks of 90days. Without billing means you have no monthly charge but if you are under contract, that contract will be extended by the length of the suspension which also pushes back upgrade dates. You can do that as often as you like as long as it is less than 180days in a 12month period. With billing means you still pay for it but you cant use it, typically only used if its under contract and its for short term, ie parents punishing kids.
So if you aren't under contract on your Xoom and you want to switch 3G service on and off, suspending without billing would be the option you want to use up to 180days per year. If you are under contract, you could also do that but keep in mind that it will push your contract end date out.

Wow what a mess. This is the only reason I didn't buy the Verizon Xoom. If the plan was like AT&T, I would have bought it without a doubt.
