Activation Questions Go Here

If you buy it on contract they will make you activate in store. Honestly, its a smarter idea than doing it at home in case anything goes wrong.

If you already have a 4G SIM, or are buying it off-contract, they shouldn't have a problem with you doing it on your own.

Actually had a problem with that when setting mine up. As a security feature, Verizon will deactivate the SIM card if it was tied to a phone that was returned for any reason. That SIM card will be dead forever; they will never reactivate it. I fought with tech support and customer service for a while before someone intelligent enough to explain to me got on the line, after which I understood but did not like x). I left a suggestion (that no one will ever look at) on how to implement a better SIM system, but we'll see how far it gets (my money is on the circular filing cabinet).

This is why I stopped buying in the store and started buying online. In the store, they are NOT happy with people like Droid800 and I who pay full retail price. Which is fine, because I realize they are commission based, but it always seems to really show in their faces and attitudes.

As far as the whole activation piece, remember you are not activating a phone you are activating a SIM card on your account. The two are completely separated from each other. Once that SIM card is activated you can stick it in any 4G phone and it will work. That is why there is no *228 OTA programming with 4G phones. So you have 2 options:

1) Have them activate the SIM on your account in the store. You will notice the SIM card is pulled from a cabinet not from the phone box. If you want to verify they did the activation correctly they can put it any 4G phone (e.g., demo unit) and test before you leave. There should be no arguing about this. If they do, it's likely the rep just isn't fully trained yet which is not their fault.

2) Buy the phone, have them hand over the SIM card and activate the SIM using the 888 number.

If you're concerned it won't work, have them plug it into a demo phone and make a call with it before you leave. If it doesn't work, that means they set your account up improperly.

Thanks for the info, that is pretty informative. I bought my D1 online and planned on purchasing this online, but the Costco deal was just too good to pass up (not just the accessories, but the 90-day exchange policy means I can wait out the Prime if necessary).

I have my un-activated Bionic at home waiting for me to get off of work :). SIM card should be activated though.

Pretty simple: Order the phone through an online 3rd party retailer. I've always bought my phones from 3rd parties, and I've always broke the "seal" to all my new phones. You also get it for cheaper (ordered mine this morning for $180).

What exactly is the activation process if you bought the phone from the online store? Do you have to activate the phone and the sim card separately? Through the phone or call into Verizon?

Okay, this is for the birds....

Bought the Bionic on the 8th at 9:15AM, and as of 5:15AM on the 9th, it STILL has NOT activated!! Called Tech Support, went back to the store, they've tried everything (and I wasn't the only one). We pulled the battery, the SIM card numerous times. All anyone can say is that "it will activate eventually".

Come on, Verizon. What's up??

Do the reps at the Verizon store get upset if you take your new DB (purchased elsewhere) in for contact info swapping from your old phone?

I have mine but have found out that since I am still on an Alltel calling plan and unwilling to change plans and lose unlimited data that I cannot activate a 4G device. So I am returning the phone and waiting a week for a D3. Not happy, but not willing to cave either.

i just received my bionic but i'm unable to dial the 1-877 number to activate it because i don't have a working phone (my touch pro 2 died last week). any way to get around this besides going to a verizon wireless store?

PM Me your cell number and I'll do it for ya! It's a simple process that is all automated, but I'll need your # and pin if you have that. I got my SIM card and phone actvated just now in 5 minutes. I understand if you dont want to do that, but wanted to lend a hand.

I know they are hard to find, but would a pay phone do the job for you?

thanks B-RAN for your offer to help but i ended up going to a payphone and activated it. thanks for the idea there idahoguy

The way this works, you must activate the 4G sim card before you can do anything else. If the sim card isn't active, it will just sit there endlessly or ask you to restart. When my wife got her Charge, you could do the activation online through my Verizon, just by entering the number on the sim. They've either moved this option, or did away with it so you have to call them.

Again, you have to activate the sim card first or it won't work for-ev-er.

Have had the phone since 11am this morning, it still won't activate. I called CS and they said they was having some serious issues with it mainly because of how many Bionics are trying to be activated at once. I was upgraded to a Tier 1 tech assistant, then a tier 2 who finally put in a ticket for my device.

She told me to leave the phone on, if you reseat the SIM card that it will reposition your SIM card in the activation queue to the back of the line. Just keep trying to activate if it isn't already done. She said that higher ups would call me when the resolve the issue if my phone still isn't activated. So pretty much just waiting for them to call, right now the Bionic is just a real expensive paperweight!

I've been trying to activate my Bionic since early this afternoon....we've been on the phone with TS for about 5 hours on and off now....they even had me go down and get a new sim card and nothing! damn this is frustrating after waiting all day to play with this thing! oh well I guess I'll hurry up and wait. I thought it was just me for a while there. I hope they get this fixed asap!
:(

I was off today but I did sell a few yesterday. They all activated before they left the store. They did take longer though. We don't make you activate the phone in store. If you want a sim card from us, we are required to activate it. It's the only way to control inventory. We are required to "sell" out a sim card using the upgrade process. It doesn't renew contract but may require plan or features on the account. In most cases the features are on our side and don't affect your cost.

EDIT: "sell" out the sim card at $0 BTW

Okay, finally got mine activated after 24 hours....

The store guys and gals (and I'm proud to say, buddies of mine) finally resorted to putting my SIM card into an HTC Thunderbolt and activating it, then putting it in my Bionic to finish the process. They are thinking that the Bionic is looking for a 4G signal to activate and can't default to the available 3G signal. And as I left the store with a working Bionic, they were setting up their demo Thunderbolts to begin activating the rest of the group that had Bionics not activating.

If that really is the case (and it seemed to be with mine and 2 others), then what a goofy thing to miss. One of the techs on the phone said that the back of the Bionic must be off in order to activate. Ehhh, we kinda scratched our heads over that one, LOL.

Oh, forgot to mention, the Bionic can be set to look for 3G service just fine, but that can't be done until the phone is, aha, activated.

At any rate, I have a working Bionic that I'm enjoying very much.
