Ad blocking solutions for rooted phone.

I recently got my hands on rooted oneplus 2 running lineage os 14. I'm looking for ad blocking apps or addons, because ads in apps cut into my data usage pretty bad. The thing is that apps like adaway are advertised towards wifi connection scenarios. What about data connections? Are there any apps or addons that block adds while on data connection?

Ad blockers allow the ads to download, they just don't allow them to show. (They can't tell that anything but a popup is going to be an ad until it's downloaded, and some popups aren't ads [for example, a popup blocker on this site will prevent the popup that you have a new PM].)

There's really no way to stop them from downloading, while allowing legitimate popups from appearing.

If the phone is rooted, you should have access to the folder containing the "hosts" file. If you can get a list of the ad server names, you can redirect them to your phone "127.0.0.1" or the like so that the ads cannot be downloaded.
