AD-Hoc network problem

I am attempting to connect my phone using an Ad-Hoc network on my laptop. The wi-fi doesn't find the network when I scan for networks. Is there something I should look for? I am currently in an area with no wireless service but, I've been told I can connect to the internet through an Ad-Hoc network using my laptop.

This is not the problem with your phone, it's the problem with the android phones, they don't detect ADHOC network... This can be done by rooting your phone. I don't know how its done, But I'd like a knowledgeable person to answer this question
