I decided to ditch Cyanogenmod and place the latest version of Lollipop (5.0.1) on my Nexus 7 (2013).

The Nexus device is running Cyanogenmod11 M12. Developer options are activated. Android Debugging is activated. USB Storage setting is MTP. I downloaded and installed the latest version of the Android SDK platform-tools. Everything appears to properly configured and installed.

Problem: When I connect the Nexus 7 to my Mac (running OS 10.10.1) nothing happens. There is no security authorization request on the device, and "adb devices" gives an empty list.

I thought I might have a bad cable, but when I use the same cable with my Nexus 5 (onto which I recently sideloaded 5.0 using the same up-to-date platform-tools), the device immediately makes an security authorization request and the device appears in the "adb devices" list. Disconnected the cable. Killed the adb server. Restarted. Connected to the Nexus 7. No worky.

I'm at a loss. Is there anything else I can try?
