Add existing WhatsApp account to new phone

I have WhatsApp on a phone in use now. I want to buy a new phone and keep the same number ONLY with WhatsApp. I cannot keep the number to use for other purposes, nor can I register WhatsApp with the same number currently being used. Is there any way to transfer WhatsApp to the new phone and keep the old number ONLY with WhatsApp?

You could port the number to Google Voice for a one-time $20 fee. Then it's yours to keep, port to a phone, whatever. (I don't even remember the number on my phone most of the time - I give out the Google Voice number. I've been through about 5 carriers and MVNOs with it, and never lost it, I just change the number of the phone it sends voice and text calls to. [Which also allows me to handle texts on my PC in Firefox with the Hangouts addon.])
