adding multiple contacts to a text

I just got a Motorola Droid & I can't for the life of me figure out how to:
1. when composing a new message, when I tap the "To" field, shouldn't my contacts come up?
2. how can I send a mass text?
I went to the Verizon store & the guy I talked to said I probably have to download an app but he didn't know which one.....

So you wanna send a text to susie, john, and mark


You start typing Susie; S-U-and it will show SUSIE, you click the name, then start typing John, J-O-and it pops up and you click him. And so on and so forth until you have a full group!

If you want a list of contacts just go to your contacts icon then scroll to the person you want to send it to the touch the picture and it will bring up all options to contact thay person and choose SMS.

You may not have the contact set as "mobile". If it's set to work, home, etc it will not show up when trying to add someone to a text message.

If it's gonna be the same group of contacts and you want to send a mass text again to them in the future....

Go to your contacts on your PC (thru gmail) and under "contatcs" look for a tab for "groups". There are default groups (friends, family, coworkers) and you can also customize and name your own group. It's pretty self-explanatory once there.

Then sync.

Then when in messaging app (don't know about stock, I use Handcent) there is an option for group in the "to" field.

I don't think there is group SMSin stock messaging, but with Hancent (free in market) there is group texting capabilities.

Easiest way to solve this problem, simply go download Handcent from the app market. It destroys the stock messenging app, you wont go back.

I downloaded Handcent within days of getting my droid. The other day I got a wild hair and decided to delete a bunch of apps and free up some app-clutter. I used the stock messaging app to see if Handcent was really useful. After about 2 minutes I was wishing I could delete the stock app. Handcent forever - I can't believe it's free.

Basically its already been answered. If you don't have a mobile number set to that contact even having handcent won't solve this problem as normally one can't send SMS or MMS or Email to a landline. If you know you have a mobile number for them programmed into your phone make sure its set to mobile.

After that goto the messaging app and start typing names simple as that .

i recently had to make the switch to handcent sms as well. i maintain and use a contact list of about 36 people to organize car club meets. i was disappointed when i first got my droid, because it didn't have the capability to send to a group. if you set up contact groups in gmail contacts on your computer, and use handcent for your sms messaging, it will give you the option to send To: a contact group you created, a feature the phone doesn't have otherwise. also, in the FAQ section of handcent's website, there is a quick "how to" regarding how to make handcent your default sms app (so you dont get sms notifications from both the stock app and handcent, who wants 2 icons showing you have a new text message?) Once you disable notifications for the stock app, it will only display them for handcent, and you use only the handcent window to manage your threaded sms messages, delete, send, etc. it's pretty awesome. and it's FREE.
