Adding music through headphones with voice mate

I am going to smash my phone into a thousand pieces soon as this has sent me crazy ! With my headphones on I press the voice button and to add an artist, for example "play ed sheeran", it then makes a one track playlist of an Ed Sheeran song. If I double tap for the next track or say "next song" it obviously starts the track from the beggining as it is the only song in the playlist. If I physically pick any song for an artist on the phone (without using voice command) I can skip the tracks with my headphones. Is there a way to simply say "play artist" and then skip to next track with headphones ? Also voice mate doesn't work with 3rd party software like poweramp properly as you can only ff or rew. I'm am being stupid (wouldn't be the 1st time) or shall I get the hammer and smash the f+&k out of the phone.:p
Thanx in advance !!

Welcome to Android Central! Do you need to use Voice Mate? On my Zenfone 2, tapping the Call button of my Motorola S305 Bluetooth headset triggers OK Google on the phone. If I say "Play Daft Punk," it starts playing a randomized playlist of my Daft Punk songs. I'm not certain, but I think the setting is in the Google Settings app, under Search & Now>Voice>Hands-free. Make sure "For Bluetooth Devices" is switched on.

This probably only works for Google Play Music. I don't use the stock Music player, so I can't comment on that.

Thank you for the response, but the headphone mic button only pauses music when not using the stock LG music player.

Yes, it is the standard headphones that come with the lg g4, the 3 button configuration. The 3rd button is pause/voice. I've got the voice command working with poweramp and double twist music players, but it still doesn't play an artist album when i ask it to.

What I'm trying to determine is if you can set up your headset Voice button to trigger Google Now, rather than Voice Mate. If you can get the Voice button to do that, then telling Google Now to "Play [artist name]" will open Google Play Music and start playing a random playlist of that artist. If you don't want to use Google Play Music, or if you can't get the Voice button to open Google Now, then what I'm suggesting won't be helpful.

I've got Voice mate to work in poweramp and double twist but not it google music, the long press which usally activates voice just pauses the music. I've changed the default voice to goggle, but still no joy in google music, it just pauses. I've gone into google settings and made sure headphone button for voice is turned on, but it doesn't work. I've downloaded 2 apps to change the headphone button function, that didn't work either. I must have put about 5 hours into this problem but have got nowhere. Could someone with an LG G4 phone confirm that their phone acts in the same way that mine does, or not, through headphone functions.
Thanks for your help so far Diddy.

You got me curious, so I just tried this with my G4 and my old (wonderful) Samsung OEM headphones. When hold down the pause button for a second or two, Google Now starts up ready for voice input (to say "play deep purple" or whatever.

So this works for me.

I suspect that the OP needs to set up their OK Google.

Deano -- go into Google Now, tap into the 3-line "hamburger" menu and then into Settings and then Voice. I'm not sure what you'd have set that would make OK Google not work as I've described... but play around with "OK Google" detection. I've got mine set to recognize "OK Google" from the Google app as well as from any screen.

Anyways, as B Diddy pointed out and I've confirmed, the scenario should work with OK Google, and not Voice Mate.

One other possibility is that because I've uninstalled Voice Mate, OK Google has taken over. I'd completely forgotten that I uninstalled it. You can do this safely, as you always re-install it using Settings... About Phone... App Updates... Idle Apps -- that's where you'd see all of the LG bloat that you happen to have uninstalled, and you have the option to "Download" it again.

Yeah !!!! Great work guys. Turns out it was voice mate causing all the pain. Uninstalled it and am now a very happy android owner. Just moved from owning an iphone 5 for the past 3 years and have been mumbling "stupid android phone" for the last week because of this problem. Once again thanks for not giving up on me !!
