adding on screen buttons?

I'm curious as to how I could add another button, such as, a menu button on my galaxy nexus. I've seen it done before, on Marcus Brownlee's YouTube channel. Can anyone lead me in the right direction? It goes without saying, that I am rooted, using a stock ROM on 4.2.2. (If I need to flash another to do this, I'll need to know how, and that knowledge would be greatly appreciated)
