ads in Google messaging app

Last week I started having full screen ads pop up in Google messaging when I am reading messages. Very agrevating.
I've scanned for viruses and nothing.
How can I fix this?

I find it highly unlikely that Google would actually do this in the Android Messages app -- chances are that some other app you installed came with adware. Uninstall apps one by one until the problem goes away.

I went to recovery and wiped the cache this morning and so far it hasn't done it again.
We'll see.
