Ads showing in subscribed app

I have an annual subscription to Etymonline's Android app. There aren't supposed to be ads on it. All of a sudden, there they are on both devices (Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S6). Tried resetting purchase, cancelling and resubscribing, uninstalling and reinstalling, rebooting my devices. The ads still show up. Is this a problem with the Play Store rather than the app. This happened before maybe a year ago and I had to cancel and restart the subscription to get rid of the ads.

I've emailed the dev and am awaiting their reply.

Does this ever happen to anyone else with an ad removal subscription?

That would really be between you and the app developer.

I moved this from the Android Apps forum to the General Help forum since the former is intended for developers to promote their apps.

Are these interstitial/banner ads in the menus, or are they intrusive full-page video ads?

Small banner ads, appearing at the bottom on the home screen of the app and between entries when I look up words.

I have had this a few times. I email the developer and they usually help one way or another

Still nothing from the dev. Have canceled the subscription until I hear from them.
