hello all! im almost there, but i would like so input on how to finish my "project".

one of the reasons to root/flash custom recovery is for the disaster backup options, and now i need those options.

phone in project: virgin mobile optimus v, 2.2.1, i dont think the particular phone is an issue here, but i think it would be better if contributors to this thread knew what phone was being used.

initial problem: dropped phone one too many times. everything works on the phone EXCEPT the microphone. so i can receive calls and hear the caller but they cant hear me. one-way phone conversations are possible but not very practical. also without the mic working properly i cant utilize any of the voice activated features of the android system. and that really is one of androids best features. (in fact its an indispensable feature after you get used to using it!)

this piece of info is phone specific: the mic on the optimus v is integrated into the main board in the phone so it is not a separate component and therefore cannot be replaced individually.

since this phone is broken beyond repair in reference to the microphone, but otherwise still functional, i decided to test the rooting/c/r/change rom (a process i call "romulation") on this phone for 2 reasons:

1. if i brick the phone, ive bricked a broken phone instead of a new working phone.
2. if i dont brick the phone i should be able to somehow backup the system/apps/data (a nandroid backup?) and transfer this "package" to another phone and keep all my info and configurations in-tact.

GOOD NEWS (at least for me). romulation process (on the broken phone) finished successfully!

so now my optimus v with a broken mic is now romulated! now i need to transfer to the new (identical) phone.

detailed scenario:

virgin mobile optimus v, no usable mic. android version 2.2.1. phone is "in service" with virgin mobile. phone is rooted with custom recovery installed (i believe clockworkmod recovery), and i installed the bumblebee rom.

so at this point everything is upgraded and working properly, except the mic.

i have purchased another optimus v, new in the box. the goal is to set up, via a back-up transfer, the new optimus v with all the "stuff" on my broken optimus v.

SIDE NOTE QUESTION: i want to transfer ALL the info from my broken phone to the new phone. this would include the system state, data, apps, settings and configurations on the broken phone.

is there a trade term in the android field that would describe the package, as a whole, of system state, data, apps, settings and configurations? it seems silly to keep typing in "system state, data, apps, settings and configurations" over and over.

if i say "transfer the rom", that would just be the rom. if i say "transfer the system state", that would just be the system info. if i say i want to "transfer everything", this term is correct but doesnt seem like a professional way to describe the transfer.

so is there a trade term that describes the package of "system state, data, apps, settings and configurations"?

also, is there a term that describes the package of "system state, data, apps, settings and configurations AND rom"?

if there is, please post that info here so i can communicate with everyone on the forums on a more concise level.

BACK TO THE PROJECT:

keep in mind here that the goal is to transfer "everything" from one phone to an identical model phone. so everything in this thread is with that in mind. i realize that the procedure may be different if i were transferring from "model a" to "model b" or from "brand c" to "brand d". but here it is transferring from virgin mobile optimus v to virgin mobile optimus v.

THOUGHT PROCESS:

i assume that i can (obviously i havent started the process with the new phone yet or i would already know the answer) root and install a custom recovery on the new phone, WHICH IS NOT IN SERVICE YET.

i also assume that the best way (maybe the only way? maybe the only practical way? ) to accomplish this with a phone not yet in service is to utilize the "superoneclick, root shell from adb folder via command prompt on my computer" technique.

am i correct with these assumptions?

and regardless of whether this particular process will work in this situation, is there another way to accomplish this goal here?

and if there is another way, what is it? and would this other way be easier/better than the process i described? an if so, why?

does the phone being "in service" or not "in service" affect this initial process of attaining root/installing a c/r/new rom?

NEXT QUESTION:

once i have root/c/r on new phone, what is the best way to "transfer everything" to the new phone?

would it be to make a nandroid back-up and flash "everything" (including the rom which is now bumblebee) (somehow) onto the new phone?

or would it be best to install the bumblebee rom first on the phone and then transfer "everything else" via a titanium back-up or a myroot backup type of program?

ANOTHER SIDE NOTE QUESTION:

what is the difference between a nandroid backup and a titanium backup?

are they the same? are they the same on a basic level but one is more advanced? or are they different types of backups with distinct and different purposes? i havent quite figured this out yet.

MAIN QUESTION:

so basically the question is: do i flash "everything" at one time, or do i install the new rom and then flash "everything else"?

NEXT QUESTIONS:

when, or does the phone being "in service" affect any of this?

when would be the best time to have the new phone activated?

im keeping the same phone number so activating both phones at the same time would be impractical as i would need 2 phone numbers, (one only temporary), and would have to transfer the valid number to the new phone after activating the second phone, blah blah blah.

so obviously for cost, time and efficiency reasons i would like to activate the new phone and transfer the service just one time.

ideally i could root/install c/r and install the new rom, either all at once or in stages, on the new phone without having to activate the phone with virgin mobile prior to doing all this, and then just go the the virgin store one time to initiate the activation of the new phone.

any imput to these questions would be greatly appreciated.

in addition, if there is information i need to complete this task or to complete it more efficiently, and i didnt know i needed to ask about, (the "i dont know what i dont know" phenomenon) please feel free to post that info here as well.
