Do I need this application? Is it hurting more than helping. Basically, I just want to kill or end the apps that I am no longer using. Not sure what the best solution is, and I'd like to get the best performance from my droid (2.1 still).

Jerry's got an article up somewhere that goes in depth about Task Killers. Read it and decide. Personally, I don't use one at all, I just tweak Android's memory management using MinFreeManager.

I've read many opinions back and forth on task killers in general. Personally I have ATK installed, but rarely use it unless I really need to kill a buggy and/or frozen app.

Task killers are good for ending stuck processes; if you don't want to have an app installed, you can do the same by going to Settings>>Applications>>Manage Applications and going to the running tab; you can force close from there.

Not saying one way is better than the other, just that that's another way to do it. :)

Android handles task killing very well. There is no need to have a task killer installed. Plus froyo has a built in task killer if you really got to stop an app.

I've read that FroYo blocks third-party task killers, so that the built-in will work unencumbered. Does anyone know if that's true?

I don't see why google would do that, honestly... That's bordering on Apple-esque behavior.

I find it very helpful because I will randomly open ATK up and find upwards to 5-7 apps running that I'm not even remotely using or haven't used in a long time... KILL!

I don't understand why/how they launch on their own to begin with.

A list of them would help, but there are quite a few things that have to run in the background to work properly. I'm assuming you're not talking about things like facebook, twitter, etc. that have updates and the like.

No, stuff like corp calendar which I have never used, alarm clock which I only use once a day but it still pops up in ATK randomly. Those are the most common ones but ill let you know about others when I come across them.

Alarm Clock has to keep running so that it can check its wake up time against the current time. You may only use it once a day, but if the alarm is set, it keeps running.

Well I use ATK all the time to kill stuff running in the background that had no business running in the first place such as, Amazon MP3 have never used and its always running yahoo messenger, sprint navigation, caller id faker, and i haven't even used that app yet. Qik also keeps starting on it's on, Sprint football, Nascar I haven't a clue what' starting up all these apps to begin with?

Some things just run on their own because they need to and some things stay running because Android tells them to so you can load them quicker when you open them again. It's just the way the OS works.

If you're having no problems using a task killer, by all means continue on. :)

I have a question and maybe I am in the wrong place but I'm sure everyone is aware that since the 2.2 update ATK and those alike won't kill tasks anymore. I just want something to kill my browser. I don't want to go back into my browser and see my facebook (or whatever I happened to be looking at hours ago) refreshing itself. Is there really no possible way to kill my browser upon exit now?

Before you exit, close all your windows, or use the Manage Applications part of Settings to force close the browser.

Yes- that is what I have been doing.... Just a lot of time verus before when I had my ATK and one easy click and everything closed... Thanks for the verification though.

I didn't write this:

Android was designed from the ground up as an operating system (OS) for mobile devices. Its built-in application and memory-management systems were engineered with battery life as one of the most critical concerns.
The Android OS does not work like a desktop operating system. On a desktop OS, like Windows, Mac OS X, or Ubuntu Linux, the user is responsible for closing programs in order to keep a reasonable amount of memory available. On Android, this is not the case. The OS itself automatically removes programs from memory as memory is needed. The OS may also preload applications into memory which it thinks might soon be needed.
Having lots of available empty memory is not a good thing. It takes the same amount of power to hold "nothing" in memory as it does to hold actual data. So, like every other operating system in use today, Android does its best to keep as much important/likely-to-be-used information in memory as possible.
As such, using a task manager/killer to constantly clear memory by killing apps is strongly NOT RECOMMENDED. Generally speaking, you should only "End" applications if you see one which is not working correctly.
