I activated advanced calling. With carrier too. Have kept it off but thought would turn on and give a go.

I can't even get a call to connect. It says dialing then boom, call ended. Nothing.

Doesn't it default if not in lte zone?

You'd think that it would. Maybe you're in a borderline area, and it's trying hard to stay with VoLTE, but failing. Have you spoken to Verizon about this?

It should default to CDMA, yes. However, in a case like that, I would definitely toggle VoLTE off on the phone in order to complete the call, at least temporarily.

Verizon has a FAQ: Advanced Calling FAQs | Verizon Wireless and they suggest exactly that:

When I'm using Advanced Calling 1.0, what can I do to avoid dropped calls if I m in a weak 4G LTE coverage area?

If you're in an area with a weak 4G LTE signal, you may want to consider temporarily turning off the VoLTE Call setting on your phone to avoid dropped calls.

Note: Remember to turn it back on when you're in a strong 4G LTE coverage area to take advantage of HD Voice and Video Calling.
